Greetings!

This edition of Ripple Effect, the quarterly newsletter of Rye Public Library,  finds us mid-winter with an early spring to look forward to  according to Punxatawney Phil this past weekend on Ground Hog Day.  This issue will focus on our programming news, as well as showcasing some of our electronic  resources in the linked icons in the left column.  Click here for a detailed calendar of events at RPL. We've got some great news and announcements in the following articles.  Read on and enjoy!

Classic Book Discussion Group: Survey Results and Date!

Thanks for participating in our recent survey to assess the interest and parameters for a classic book discussion group at RPL this winter.   After reviewing your input and comments, we will indeed be offering an initial classics discussion group on Wednesday, March 6 at 7-8pm here at Rye Public Library!   The first discussion will be on Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, the leading choice of the survey.  Holly Perrault professor of Women's Studies at the University of New Hampshire will lead the discussion group.  Please contact us or sign up at the Library to reserve your spot and a copy of the book.   In further survey results, your desire to consider materials from both early and modern classics was evident, so we'll try to accommodate that request in future sessions.  (We could only offer a sampling of titles in the survey, but future directions can be determined by the participants after our initial session.--thanks for the title suggestions)  Evening proved to be the first choice for group timing, although there were other suggestions.  Sadly, our resources prevent us from offering a second group with the dual timing schedule of our ongoing Adult book group.   Watch for future surveys as we develop programming and planning at Rye Public Library.

Programming News
Dr. Nathan Hamilton presented his program Digging In To The Isles of Shoals to a standing-room-only crowd on Sunday January 27th.  We are working to schedule a second program with Dr. Hamilton to accommodate those who could not stay on the 27th.  Find news coverage here.

Every week Amelia McKenney leads our Chair Yoga sessions for an eager and abundant group.  With 25 years of yoga practice, a nursing degree, 1,500 hours of training at the Kripalu Institute, and a life-long athletic lifestyle, Amelia is well qualified to guide this unique practice.   Each member enjoys an interview to ascertain their health history and identify any individual limitations. Safety and comfort are key to Amelia's approach to the meditation, prana yama breathing, joint warm-ups, stretches and postures that make up the Chair Yoga session.   Sessions run for 90 minutes starting at 9:30am on Monday mornings at Rye Public Library.

Our newest activity book group is called Vertical Volumes.  Members are reading the gripping mountaineering book Touching the Void by Joe Simpson, and trying their hands (and feet) at a bit of indoor rock climbing to experience the book in a physical as well as mental sense.  The discussion will culminate with a public showing of the film version of the book on Friday February 15th at 6pm at Rye Public Library.

We're off to a great start in 2013! With our door count up by 32% from last year at this time, and our circulation stats up by mote than 6%,it looks like we're due for another active year.  2012 proved to be a strong year for RPL too, check out some of last year's outstanding statistics here, and review our annual reports in  quick links. We've got a great year of programming and services lined up for you, and look forward to your participation and suggestions.  Thanks for helping to make us one of the premier libraries in the State!
