climbing and reading at RPL!

Greetings!

We're just a week out from our first discussion/climbing session-Tuesday Jan 29 at 5:30 pm here at RPL!  I hope you are enjoying Touching the Void.  We'll meet  upstairs in the Library's New Hampshire room for a few quick items of business, then head over to New Heights on the Portsmouth Community Campus to meet Sally Gregory and continue our book discussion as we learn the ropes.
We'll have a van ready to transport everyone to and from the Library parking lot.  I encourage you to plan on the van versus your own car as we will use the travel time for discussion, and have less impact on Community Campus parking.
If you have not officially signed up for the program on the roster at the Library, but intend to participate, please let me know by Friday.  We have a great group signed up already and will surely have a great experience.
Sincerely,

Andrew Richmond

Our friend  Rob Levey, runner and author of the Seacoast Running column in the Portsmouth Herald,  published a great article about  Running and Reading last fall.

In today's article 1/23/13, he featured the Vertical Volumes Book Group here at RPL!.

Rob is an adventurous kindred spirit and a talented runner and writer!

About our Instructor
Sally Gregory

New Heights Adventure Program Coordinator

B.S. Outdoor Education from Houghton College

Year started with New Heights: 1995

As Adventure Coordinator, Sally leads one of New Heights' core programs. She brings to her job a rich background in the field, including instruction for the Wolfcreek Wilderness School and Outward Bound. Sally is certified as a Wilderness First Responder and can usually be found leading rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, surfing, and skiing trips, as well as an annual high school trip to National Parks in Utah, Texas, and New Mexico.  These adventures all have an emphasis on leadership development, self-reliance, and environmental ethics.  The adventure kids at New Heights sign up for these programs year after year and peer instruction has become a major component of each trip.  Sally also is an advisor for Peer Leadership, a student run community service based group at Portsmouth High School.  And, lastly, she facilitates a weekly intergenerational activity based program for senior adults and middle schoolers that is 11 years strong.

Sally's foundation is her family who have been her cheerleaders her entire life.  They've always been her strongest supporters and taught her to always have fun and make sure everyone around her is too!

Our Book
Touching the Void by Joe Simpson is " a document of psychological, even philosophical, witness to the rarest compulsion".  Touching the Void was written 20 years ago and yet is still the benchmark all mountaineering literature is measured against.  The book tells the story of a two-man climbing venture gone bad on the remote Andean peak of Siula Grande.  Evoking the essence of the freedom, danger and rewards of mountaineering, it also offers a raw look at the human capacity for survival.

Our final session on Friday February 15 will be a viewing of the outstanding film adaptation of the book.  We'll have a chance to compare the book with the film and enjoy an excellent film.
