Library Profile

The Rye Public Library opened on September 6, 1911 for the circulation of books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon. Gifts to the Town of Rye, both land and building funds, were donated by Miss Mary Tuck Rand. Miss Rand formally presented these gifts as a memorial to her family in a day of ceremony on June 22, 1911. Both dates were commemorated during our Rye Public Library Centennial Celebration conducted alongside our planning project during 2011.

Rye Public Library was a relative latecomer in Rockingham County New Hampshire, due to the dissolution of an earlier bequest to the Town to build a public library. In years since, however, RPL has emerged as one of the most energetically supported and appreciated public libraries in the State. The tremendous response to our 2011 Centennial Celebration speaks volumes in illustration of this point.

The RPL facility has grown from its initial dimensions with three sequences of expansion. Two earlier additions, in 1967 and 1980 were augmented by the most recent expansion begun in early 1998 and opened to the public on January 16, 1999. Through the dedication of the Rye Public Library Board of Trustees who garnered wide community support, this expansion effort resulted in the wonderfully balanced and attractive building we now enjoy.

Thank You!
We'd like to extend our thanks to the many, many community volunteers who took part in our Strategic Planning process.  Our Planning Committees and Visioning Session participants are recognized in the plan report, and I thank you again for your time and effort.  I also  wanted to remember those on our Staff and Board of Trustees who put in extra time taking on planning projects.  Rye graphic designer Amanda Puglisi offered her services at a reduced rate while preparing our print piece, and Rye web-designer Kate Biddle also worked at a reduced rate in developing the website component of the Rye Public Library Three-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015.  Please recognize these talented local individuals for their community spirit.

Planning Summary

In autumn 2010 the Rye Public Library Board of Trustees undertook to refresh previous planning activities with the creation of a three year strategic plan to guide the direction of the Rye Public Library through 2015. In the current environment of library service, recognizing the important role technology plays with our operation, this planning period was chosen to correlate with a technology cycle--or the common time span current technological iterations remain relevant.

A guiding committee was first established to design the planning process, based on concepts presented in the American Library Association publication The New Planning For Results[1]. This committee then made wider invitations to establish our full Strategic Planning Committee with the charge of working in advisementto the Rye Public Library Trustees in helping undertake the many aspects of developing a Three-Year Strategic Plan for the Rye Public Library.

Work began in spring 2011 with monthly meetings of our Planning Committee to implement the plan design which incorporated a public visioning session, and library technology summit discussion to draw wider community input to the steady background work of the Planning Committee.   Consulting firm Opus Advisors was brought onboard to assist with the public visioning session component of the plan. The entirety of 2011 was spent in developing our plan.

The results of Committee research, Public, Trustee, and Library staff inputs, were compiled to formulate the goals and objectives presented here. Assessments of current conditions in Rye along with future possibilities were considered by these capable groups during the planning process. Service responses were determined to direct the priority of the multitude of inputs considered in the planning process. Expanding on the existing Town of Rye Master Plan, our planning work centered on developing roles for the Rye Public Library in helping further the visions of the Master Plan. In this way, our planning builds harmoniously on the community standards established in the Master Plan, and continues to enhance the Town of Rye through further integrating the role of the Rye Public Library.
