China Gateway Discovery Theme grant recipients unveiled
Two Ohio State professors were awarded the China Gateway Discovery Theme grant, which promotes research collaborations between Ohio State faculty and partners in the Greater China region. C.K. Shum, professor and distinguished university scholar in the Division of Geodetic Science and Craig Jenkins, director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies and professor of Sociology, Political Science and Environmental Science, submitted the winning proposal, along with John Casterline, Chungyen Kuo, Shuli Song, Fuwen Xiong, Yunxuan Zhou, Yuan Ren and Joyce Chen.
The proposal was titled, "Yangtze Delta Coastal Vulnerability: Towards An Integrated Social and Natural Science Framework For Urban Sustainability (Yang-SOS)," and discussed the susceptibility of the Yangtze Delta due to accelerated sea-level rise. Population growth, extraction of ground water and cyclone-driven storm surges have all significantly increased the vulnerability of this urban area. The proposal also involved a diverse group of Ohio State, Chinese and Taiwanese collaborators and letters of support demonstrated the endurance of the proposal.
The grant awards up to $25,000 per year, supports international workshops and conferences and creates opportunities for long-term international collaborative projects focusing on the social and economic aspects of Ohio State's discovery themes.

Alumni spotlight: Jared Psigoda
Jared Psigoda, 28, is the co-founder and CEO of Reality Squared Games (R2Games) and was included on the 2014 Forbes China 30 under 30 list.
"I graduated from Ohio State in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and Japanese, and a Master's in Chinese through the Chinese Flagship Program. I chose Ohio State because it was close to home, but it enabled me to reach further in distance and aptitude. After studying one year of Chinese at Ohio State, my instructors recommended me to participate in an elementary study abroad program in Qingdao. I participated in the Chinese Flagship Program's study abroad portion which included both language-focused classes as well as normal Chinese graduate course study where we were allowed to choose which subjects we wanted to study. I also participated in several internship programs arranged by Ohio State, the most memorable of which was my volunteering with the Qingdao Olympic Committee for the sailing portion of the 2008 Olympic Games in Qingdao." Chinese parent newsletter subscriptions continue to increase
In March 2013, the Ohio State Parent and Family Relations office and the China Gateway office collaborated to publish a monthly newsletter in Chinese to send to parents of Chinese students.
"Our monthly newsletters allow parents and students to be connected through the Ohio State experience, even if they are living nearly half a world away. By providing our families in China with information about their students' lives on campus, we are strengthening a partnership that enhances student success," said Javaune Adams-Gaston, vice president for Student Life.
