Global May students in China
Thirteen Ohio State students traveled to Chengdu, China this May as part of the China Global May study abroad program. Throughout their stay they studied at Southwest University for Nationalities and immersed themselves in the Chinese culture by partnering with local students. Mark Bender, professor and chair of the Department of East Asian Language and Literatures, served as the resident director for the program.
The students spent the last three days of the program in Shanghai visiting the Gateway office. Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway, showed them around the office and introduced them to everyone. College of Engineering global studies manager visits China
Don Hempson, global studies manager for the College of Engineering, traveled to China in May in an effort to continue strengthening partnerships with universities and companies. These key partnerships will help to expand opportunities for Ohio State faculty and students in the College of Engineering. Hempson visited six major cities in two weeks and described his trip as an excellent experience. "I had a very productive two weeks in China that have generated a number of opportunities for the College of Engineering," said Hempson. "The increased opportunities for engineering students and faculty are very promising and exciting."
The China Gateway assisted Hempson by setting up meetings with universities and companies, as well as helping him connect with alumni while in China.
"My trip and the opportunities it generated would not have been as productive (or even possible) without the high professionalism and incredible assistance the China Gateway team provided," said Hempson. Hempson also participated in classroom and cultural activities with the China Global May study abroad program group while he was in Chengdu.

Pre-departure orientation embraces another year of incoming Chinese students
Ohio State held a pre-departure orientation for incoming Chinese students from June 14 - 20. The program consists of two sessions that will each last a day and a half and were held in Beijing and Shanghai. This orientation helped students and their families properly transition to the university and better understand the academic expectations at Ohio State. Students learned about the culture and traditions of the university through activities and demonstrations, such as singing "Carmen Ohio" and doing the "O-H-I-O" cheer. Students also broadened their Ohio State network prior to their arrival in Columbus by interacting with the university leadership team, current students and alumni who were in attendance. The China Gateway team has been instrumental in the planning efforts and provided logistical support for all the local venues and responded to a wide variety of questions about Ohio State throughout the Pre-Departure Orientation sessions. The orientations were coordinated through a partnership among Ohio State's offices of International Affairs, Student Life and Enrollment Services.
