Ohio State leaders travel to India  

 

Several Ohio State leaders recently traveled to India to meet with industry leaders, academic institutions and alumni about potential research collaborations, partnerships and internships for engineering students. David Williams, dean of the College of Engineering, William Brustein, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs and Patrick Osmer, vice provost and dean of the Graduate School, along with India Gateway director Ratnesh Bhattacharya, traveled to New Delhi, Aligarh, Bangalore, Mangalore, Manipal and Mumbai over a five-day span. They received an enthusiastic response from potential industry and academic partners including Tata, General Electric, Mahindra and Manipal University.

 

While in India, the delegation also participated in the signing of the OSU-AMU Memorandum of Understanding and the ribbon cutting of the OSU-AMU Center of Excellence for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education and Research (STEM-ER). The center is part of the pilot program that is a result of Ohio State receiving the Obama-Singh award.

Ohio State receives Obama-Singh award  

 

Ohio State is one of four U.S. universities to receive the highly competitive Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative award for its project, "Training the Next Generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Faculty at Higher Education Institutions in India." Over a three-year period, Ohio State will receive approximately $250,000 to launch a pilot program with Aligarh Muslim University in India. This program will lay the groundwork for capacity building in STEM education and research at Indian universities in collaboration with universities in the United States.  

   

On September 15-18, Professors Anil Pradhan and Sultana Nahar were joined by India Gateway Director Ratnesh Bhattacharya to visit Aligarh Muslim University to discuss the progression of the program. The pilot program will feature a concurrent two-year dual degree program including an advanced graduate degree from Aligarh Muslim University and a newly designed master's degree with a STEM-ER specialization at Ohio State.

Co-founder of India Education Initiative visits Ohio State   

Ohio State alumnus Madhav Chavan visited Ohio State in October 2013 to meet with faculty in the College of Education and Human Ecology. Chavan is co-founder and CEO of the Pratham India Education Initiative, the largest non-governmental organization working to provide quality education to the underprivileged children of India. During his visit he shared his experiences with faculty, staff and students and delivered a presentation on the theme of education and social entrepreneurship. 

Ohio State alumnus leads India solar market 

 

In August, Ohio State College of Engineering alumnus, Ardeshir Contractor, visited Ohio State to share his experiences with students in the Choose Ohio First for Engineering Entrepreneurship program and the Solar Education and Outreach organization.   

Contractor co-founded the solar developer startup Kiran Energy in 2009 and was previously managing director of KPMG Advisory in India. Kiran Energy is headquartered in Mumbai and has become the leading supplier of solar energy to India's government and industry. The company continues to greatly contribute to the development of solar energy in India.

Strategic Management Conference to be held in India 

 

Fisher College of Business Professor Jay Anand is co-chairing the second annual Strategic Management Society Conference in Mohali, India. The conference will take place December 17-19, 2013 and is hosted by the Indian School of Business. The conference will provide attendees with the opportunity to develop and share their insights on strategic challenges and solutions relating to India and other high-growth markets. 

 

The conference aims to build on the premise that emerging economies, like India, offer rich opportunities for innovative research. Speakers, panels and workshops will provide a platform for academics and practitioners to share their perspectives. Learn more about this strategic management conference.

2015 Health Sciences Innovation Conference

 

The OSU India Gateway will host its first Health Sciences Innovation Conference in Mumbai, India on January 15 - 18, 2015. The focus of the conference will be India's rapidly growing biotech and health sciences industry with the goal of developing strategic partnerships between Ohio State faculty and other Indian academic institutions. The All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the country's top public health care and research institution, will partner with Ohio State in hosting this conference. As part of this partnership, a two-day workshop on Regenerative Medicine will be hosted by AIIMS at New Delhi on January 12-13, 2015.  

 

Chandan Sen, professor and associate dean in the College of Medicine, is chair of the organizing committee and William Brustein, vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, is serving as co-chair. The Ohio State India Gateway will provide support for the conference in-country.

Meeting with alumni
The Ohio State China Gateway has represented Ohio State in Shanghai since June 2010. Ohio State's first office in another country, the China Gateway enhances the university's global reach and advances its teaching, research and engagement mission.

The Ohio State Brazil Gateway is in planning stages, and has a projected opening sometime in 2014. A Faculty Advisory Committee has been appointed to help shape the development of a Gateway office for Ohio State in S�o Paulo, Brazil.
