PORTABLE FIREPLACE SAFETY & OTHER FIRE SAFETY TIPS
Portable Fireplaces: Tips for Staying Cozy and Safe
Portable fuel-burning fireplaces have become a popular way for people to heat their homes during winter months.  However, if not used properly, these devices can be dangerous and pose a serious fire hazard.  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February.  Learn how to "Put a Freeze on Winter Fires."  Before you snuggle up to a portable fireplace, keep these NFPA safety tips in mind:
  • Make sure the fireplace has an Underwriters' Laboratory (UL) listing. This ensures the product has been tested for safety;
  • Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions closely;
  • Keep the area where you're using the fireplace well ventilated;
  • Do not use the fireplace in sleeping areas; and
  • Light the fireplace using a utility lighter or long match.
As with all heating equipment, space is important! Create a "safe zone" around the device by keeping children, pets, and anything that can burn at least three feet away.
To find out more information and fire protection tips check out the links on the NFPA website.

WINTER REMINDERS - As the Snow Falls...

Removal of Snow and Ice
  • Clear public sidewalks of snow and ice.Village Ordinance requires that residents remove snow and ice from their public sidewalk area within 24 hours of a snowfall.  Also, do not blow or shovel snow from your driveway or mailbox area onto the sidewalk.
  • Do not shovel or blow snow into the street.  This creates a hazardous condition for motorists and unnecessary return trips by the snow plow to clear the streets.  In addition, Village Ordinance
    prohibits this action and doing so may result in a fine.
  • Keep your mailbox drive-up area accessible for U.S. Mail vehicles.
    Residents are responsible for clearing snow from the curb area around their mailbox after a snowfall so that mail vehicles can access the mailbox for delivery.
  • Adopt a fire hydrant.
    Please clear snow away from fire hydrants located near your property.  This effort helps the Fire Department and the Water Utility to manage the water supply system and to quickly respond to emergencies.
