Be Prepared to Stay Safe & Healthy in Winter
Winter storms and cold temperatures can be hazardous, but if you plan ahead, you can stay safe and healthy.  Prepare your home and cars.  Prepare for power outages and outdoor activity.  It is not too late to start now!  For tips and additional information go to: http://www.cdc.gov/Features/WinterWeather

Avoid Serious Health Problems

Serious health problems can result from prolonged exposure to the cold such as hypothermia and frostbite.

When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced.  Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body's stored energy.  The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature.  Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well.  This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won't be able to do anything about it.  Seek medical attention immediately.  For information on how to recognize hypothermia and what to do about it go to: http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/winter/staysafe/hypothermia.asp .   Also, please remember to assist your neighbors!

Emergency Preparedness Apps
Mobile applications have become more useful in keeping emergency preparedness information readily available to the public.  Recently, the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a new mobile preparedness app called "Lantern Live." The app helps consumers quickly find and share critical information about nearby gas stations and power outages during energy emergencies.  "Lantern Live" allows users to:
  • Report operational status of local gas stations;
  • Find fuel;
  • Look up local utility power outage maps; and
  • Access useful disaster tips.

"Lantern Live" is currently free to download for Android users via Google Play.  Looking for more preparedness apps?  Keep disaster information at your fingertips with mobile apps from  FEMA and the  American Red Cross.

Snow Plow Safety

Motorists should be cautious when they encounter snowplows and limit driving during severe storms to avoid becoming stranded which can impede snow removal efforts.  To enhance public safety and assist plow operators, Wisconsin Department of Transportation offers the following winter driving tips:

  • Before traveling, call 511 or go online to Wisconsin 511 to check road conditions.
  • If there's ice and snow, take it slow.  Posted speed limits apply when travel conditions are ideal, and such speeds may be hazardous when roads are slick or visibility is reduced.  Most traffic crashes in winter are caused by drivers going too fast for conditions.
  • When travel conditions become especially hazardous, postpone or cancel your trip.
