Holiday and Christmas Tree Fire Safety
The Saukville Fire Dept. would like to share these safety tips with you. These tips are courtesy of the U. S. Fire Administration. Our hope is that you follow these tips and enjoy a safe and merry Christmas Season.

Decorating homes and businesses is a long-standing tradition around the holiday season. Unfortunately, these same decorations may increase your chances of fire. Following a few simple fire safety tips can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas tree from creating a tragedy.
- Don't put your live Christmas tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks.
- Place trees away from heat sources, including fireplaces or heat vents. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame, or sparks.
- Keep the live tree stand filled with water at all times.
- Use only nonflammable decorations.
- Don't link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it's safe. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet.
- Ensure that Christmas trees and other holiday decorations don't block an exit way.
- For more tips on how to prevent a holiday fire and what to do in case a fire starts in your home, visit the U.S. Fire Administration's website at www.usfa.fema.gov
Please contact the Saukville Fire Department at 284-5800 if you have any questions. If you get the answering machine, please leave a message and someone will call you back asap. If it is an emergency, evacuate the residence and call 911 from outside the building. |

Attention Taxpayers...
Property Tax bills have been mailed out. The full amount of your property tax bill, or the first installment, is due to the Village of Saukville by January 31, 2013.
Property Tax Payment Information
How the tax bill is distributed: While the full amount of the tax bill is collected by the Village, only a portion of every dollar (.32) is utilized to operate the Village. The remaining amount is distributed to the respective taxing jurisdictions. Below is a breakdown of the dollar distribution:
Please keep in mind:
- In order to deduct your property tax payment off of your 2012 income taxes, it must be paid by December 31, 2012.
- Payments can be made at Village Hall, Port Washington State Bank or BMO Harris (Saukville Branches).
- If you are getting a refund from your escrow account, please go to either Saukville bank branch. You must pay inside, not at drive-through tellers. Bring your tax bill to process payment. Refunds can be processed immediately at these banks.

Holiday Energy Saving & Safety Tips |
Electricity bills can grow during the holidays if you decorate with strings of lights. Consider switching to LED (light-emitting diode) holiday lights to save energy and money. In addition to the energy and cost savings, LED lights are much cooler than incandescent bulbs, reducing the risk of fires.
Every holiday season fires claim lives and cost millions in damage. To prevent holiday fires in your home, use nonflammable decorations, do not overload electrical sockets, regularly water live Christmas trees, and avoid the use of lit candles. As you should do year-round, ensure that your smoke alarms are working.
If you plan to buy toys for the kids in your life, choose age-appropriate toys and look for labels with safety advice. For young children, avoid toys with small parts, sharp edges, and electric toys that can heat up. Always purchase safety gear in addition to sports-related gifts or ride-on toys such as bicycles or skateboards.
Get additional toy safety tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (PDF).
