Winterizing Your Vehicle  & Preparing for Winter Driving
Cold, snow, ice, and slippery roads are coming again.  Are you and your vehicle ready?

Now is the time to winterize and gather items for an emergency kit in your vehicle, and make sure you have a NOAA Weather Radio with fresh batteries in your home.

Blizzard

*   Check the tread on your tires.  More tread equals more traction.

*   Replace your wiper blades.

*   Top off the windshield washer fluid and keep extra on hand.

*   Check the anti-freeze protection level.  -20° F or lower is recommended.

*   Check battery age and charge level.

*   Check for exhaust leaks that could release deadly fumes into the

    passenger compartment.

*   Keep blanket(s), gloves, hat, boots, flashlight, shovel, cat litter or sand

in the trunk in case you get stuck.

*   Have a window scraper and brush within easy reach.

MOST Importantly, get an emergency kit in your car.  It could save your life!

Keep in mind that every year there are new or inexperienced drivers driving in the winter for their first time.  Increase your following distances and give yourself extra time to stop.  Stay far away from maintenance vehicles.  When in doubt, slow down!

Additional winter weather tips and how to put together a winter emergency kit are available at the ReadyWisconsin website (readywisconsin.wi.gov).  In addition, there are numerous winter storm maps and a history of Wisconsin's winter weather produced by the National Weather Service.  For complete info, go to:        http://ready.wi.gov/winter/docs/Winter_Awareness_Media_Packet2012.pdf

ReadyWisconsin will air Television and Radio Public Service Announcements in November, urging viewers and listeners to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles.  Wisconsin residents are also encouraged to sign up for a chance to win a winter survival kit on the ReadyWisconsin website: readywisconsin.wi.gov.  Share your winter survival story on Facebook for another chance to win: www.facebook.com/readywisconsin.

http://www.we-energies.com/slo/streetlight_outage.htm   or...call 800-662-4797 to report the outage.  Be sure you have either a pole # or address location when reporting outages.

Fall is Furnace Tune Up Time

Furnace

Before winter closes in, now is the time to have your furnace tuned up and prepared for Winter.
Doing so will reap a number of benefits:

*  Change out dirty air filters that can lower air quality.

*  Ensure it is operating to its optimal efficiency given high fuel costs.

*  Check for exhaust leaks that could lead to deadly carbon monoxide poisoning (the "silent  killer").

*  Check for fire related hazards such as leaking fuel delivery lines.

*  Check thermostat operation to make sure maximum comfort is being delivered.

Homes with fireplaces or free standing heating stoves should also have their chimneys cleaned and inspected so that there is no blockage due to animal activity, soot accumulation, or vegetative debris.  Many heating service providers offer fall tune-up and inspection specials.  Take advantage of these offers.  Your budget, home,  and even your life  may be in the balance.

Be wise and be safe.
