NEW!

FACEBOOK!

November 2014
Okay, maybe not completely shameless...

My new shop is open 24 hours a day, online at
It's the exceptional artist who is as comfortable at promotion (and sales) as he or she is at creating.

I am NOT one of those exceptions.

But I'm trying to become more comfortable with the business end of my ... business. This newsletter is one indication of that. Another is my new online store on Society6.com which allows folks to purchase products featuring images of my favorite quilts.

Hopefully, you already know you can buy my book, Serendipity Quilts (now out-of-print and unavailable through most shops), and patterns through my website, www.susancarlson.com as well as sign up for retreats there as well.

But in case you're still unsure, I've included below a quick and handy guide to finding all your Susan Carlson stuff--from four-day retreats to coffee mugs, its all there.

To appease that little voice in my head whispering that self-promotion is crass, I've sweetened my pitch by including a link to a new free-of-charge pattern. So be sure to download the pattern and share this newsletter with anyone else who would like the pattern.

Thanks for your support. I truly appreciate all my students and followers.

Take care of yourself,
Susan
guideanchorMore Susan Carlson than You Can Shake Stick At

Ever wanted to sip your coffee from a mug proudly displaying a Susan Carlson quilt? Okay, maybe not. But if you did, or if you have someone on your Christmas list who might like something Susan Carlson-related, here's a list of all the stuff I offer and where to find it.

Gifts and Prints
Society6.com is the place to visit for gifts and things to treat yourself with:
Fine-art prints (framed or not) on acid-free paper
Canvas prints
Stationery cards
iPhone, iPod, iPad, and laptop "skins"
T-shirts of every color and style
Tote bags
Throw pillows
and of course coffee mugs (in TWO sizes!)

I've been VERY happy with the color quality on the items I've already test-ordered. And my quilts are certainly bright and colorful! However, I've heard that this company's shirts tend to have that "aged and vintage" look. Well, that's me (more or less), and it could be an interesting take on my quilts. I'm giving it a try, though my test-shirt has not arrived by the sending of this newsletter.

Quilt Retreats, Book, Patterns
My own website, www.susancarlson.com is where you'll find stuff related to learning and expanding on my quilting technique. Click on the accompanying links for more info.

Quilts Retreats: Held here in Harpswell, Maine several times a year, these retreats are intimate (limit of 12 students per session), and feature great food, a visit to my studio, chair massage, a tour of the area. However, none of these things will distract you from the two or four days of fun but intensive work you'll do on a new quilt or existing piece. So bring your luscious fabrics, bags of scraps and prepare to be challenged!

Book: Serendipity Quilts explores and explains my own technique of fabric collage. In five step-by-step how-to's, I lead you through simple quilts that can be completed in a day or two, through larger, complex pieces that will really stretch your creativity. (As I said before, this book is now out of print and thus getting harder and harder to find.)

Patterns: Own the book already or have taken a class and are looking for a new project to try? My patterns are available either as paper prints or as PDFs emailed directly to you (please allow 24 hours to process). From fish to bugs to geckos and sea turtles, let me give you an easy start in creating your next fabric collage masterpiece.

Every few months I make a new pattern available for free to newsletter subscribers. This month's choice is a design based on an older favorite of mine, Limelight Lionfish. He looks appropriately festive for this time of year! At one point in my career I was creating and selling small, framed wall quilts. I don't know how many fish quilts I made (hundreds), but they were all different, and this one was one-of-a-kind. I love his Mohawk spines and flowing side fin. Make your own version with this easy-to-use design, downloaded directly to your computer.

Feel free to share this newsletter with anyone who you think would like this pattern.

2015 Harpswell Quilting Retreat Dates

Students are beginning to sign up for next year's Harpswell, Maine retreats. The participants enjoy the smaller class size (maximum 12), giving them more one-on-one instruction. They also appreciate the experience of staying in a classic Maine B&B, taking in the sights of the area, and enjoying good food and great camaraderie with their fellow students.

Where in the World is Susan Carlson?

Teaching Schedule Preview:
My trip next week to the Columbus, Ohio area will finish off this year's classes. I'll be visiting the Common Threads Quilt Guild and Quilt Beginnings quilt shop. At Common Threads I have a lecture and a one-day spiral class scheduled. Then I spend two days at Quilt Beginnings teaching my Cutting Loose class. The fish, butterfly, and bug subject matter are some of my favorite images. Fun fabric play to end the year!
