The Given Land is a novel written by my husband, which was inspired by our family's trip to New Zealand. When predators invade their island home, the bird heroes of the Given Land are forced to fight for their existence. Geared to young adult readers (aka our son, Sam), it will appeal to adults as well. I don't know about you, but my spring and summer have been quite full and busy. June's retreat was small but lovely with students from Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, and Belgium!
Here, returning student Christina shows off her sun quilt started at one of last year's retreats.
Below, world traveler Rit adds contrast to the wild portrait of her grandson.
Teaching travel has included Montana (see my furry souvenir in photo above!), Ohio, and New Zealand. Maybe I'll have a chance to sort through those 2000+ photos for some travel shots in September!
August itself has been slow and hot as summer should be. It's been contemplative for me as well, as it's the 1-year anniversary of a breast cancer diagnosis. Needless to say, this past year was not exactly how I had planned it to be. Travel was cancelled or put on hold to accommodate surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy schedules. A big thank you to all the would-be students who were so understanding with my change in plans.
I've been lucky with no further signs of cancer and virtually no side effects from the medical treatments. Though I do have a new, and grayer, hairstyle. I've learned how to take better care of myself, and I've realized what a great support system I have in my family and friends. An even bigger thank you to them.
Now, if you'll excuse me, my studio is calling. There's new work to begin, and one special creature in particular has been waiting long enough to get started on.
Until later, take care, --Susan |
Final Maine Retreat for 2013 in October!
Join me for a four-day retreat here in my hometown of Harpswell Maine. Stay at the Harpswell Inn, a classic Maine B&B as you explore fabric, pattern, color, and composition, all while in the company of other like-minded fabric fanatics!
Here's a nice article about Harpswell, if you need even more incentive to visit. It highlights our own Lookout Point Road, that both I and the Inn live on. My yurt studio is mentioned, though it's now been replaced with a red-roofed barn-like studio. Which you'll get to see at the retreat.
The sign-up is going well, though there's still room in October, let me know and I'lll reserve your spot. Payment is taken either through PayPal or by check. Visit my website here to sign up.
Class size is limited to 12 students to allow for more individual attention.
A couple more photos from June's retreat to whet your appetite for four days of fabric play with lots of colorful scraps, good food, beautiful scenery, and great company.

Husbands joined us for our opening night lobster dinner at a local lobster pound and restaurant on Basin Cove. The catch could not have been any fresher! My husband Tom (standing), gave those who needed it a lesson on how to eat a lobster. A perfect summer evening.
October 13-16: Leaf Peepers Quilt Retreat
Enjoy the change of seasons in beautiful Maine while enjoying a four-day Fabric Images Retreat. After a Saturday night lobster dinner, the following four days will allow students to either complete a simpler project or to get a good start on a more ambitious project. Plus, Fall in Maine is one of the most beautiful times of the year-you may want to schedule an extra day or more on either side of the class to take in the foliage! Read the class description for Fabric Images on Susan's website.
Price of $520 includes:
- Four-day class
- Lobster dinner Saturday night
- Lunches Sunday through Wednesday
- Morning and afternoon coffee, tea, and snacks
- Dinner Sunday and Tuesday (Monday is open to explore local restaurants)
- Evening trunk show of Susan's quilts
- Hand and arm massage from a local massage therapist. (Full massage appointments may be scheduled for an extra fee.)
- Visit to Susan's studio
Lodging additional.

Collaged Floor In the last couple months I've received many fun comments about my collaged studio floor. So, I've decided to add a new element to my newsletter and website called "Recycle Sue" (a wink to Sunbonnet Sue). I enjoy repurposing whatever I can and piecing things together not only with fabric, but other materials as well. Every so often, when something especially fun and successful comes along, I'll write up a little how-to for you.
I'll start off with instructions for the floor. It's been 3 months finished, and so far so good. Showing no signs of wear-even after a few puppy house breaking accidents! I give no guarantees, but follow this link for the how-to. |
