The Given Land is a novel written by my husband, which was inspired by our family's trip to New Zealand. When predators invade their island home, the bird heroes of the Given Land are forced to fight for their existence. Geared to young adult readers (aka our son, Sam), it will appeal to adults as well. Just a quick note to tell you what a great weekend I just had with my students at the 2013 Mother's Day Retreat here in Harpswell, Maine. Friday and Saturday were lots of fun (though too short, of course). Thanks to the gals for making my job such a pleasure! For those of you who would like take a class with me this summer or fall, read below for a description of the retreats upcoming.

One of my favorite memories of this retreat will be of hosting my students in my new studio. Not quite finished but such a nice place to display my work.
And for those of you in the mid-west who can't make it to Maine, I'll be teaching at the National Quilting Association Annual Show in Columbus, Ohio, June 27-29. There's still space available. Visit http://nqaquiltshow.org/show/ClassIndex to sign up for one of my classes.

Hello to the New Studio
After more than four months of labor, my new studio is nearing completion! Just a few finishing touches then I'll be ready to move in and start creating. This will be a great way to refire my creative furnace after a short hiatus.
My commute remains short. For those of you who remember, the new structure rests exactly where my studio yurt used to be--a few short steps from my front door. While I will always remember the yurt fondly, the new space is a great step up.
Have you guessed yet what the mystery photo is? Here's another hint. (For the answer, read on below.) |

What is it?
It's the floor of my new studio. The floor is a collage (imagine that!) of recycled dress patterns. The paper instructions went down first--glued down with a mix of water and Elmer's. Then I did a second layer of tissue paper patterns on top. In the picture above I'm applying polyurethane as a sealer. Many of you have probably heard of "paper bag" floors. Well, this is a variation on that technique. Pretty neat, huh?
