Appalachia 2015
ND's 24th Annual Trip to Appalachia
From June 27-July 5, a group of 41 students and chaperones traveled to Neon, Kentucky for Notre Dame's 24th annual Appalachia trip. While in Kentucky, the group worked with HOMES, Inc., a group committed to building residential housing and providing low-interest mortgages for residents of this coal-mining community. Notre Dame has worked with HOMES since 2000 (with the exception of two years spent in West Virginia). On this year's service trip, the group of 25 students and 16 adult chaperones were assigned to one of four work sites. Projects included roof and siding repair, deck staining, exterior and interior painting, general improvements to the HOMES facility, insulation work and power washing. The group worked daily from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm and spent Wednesday visiting Breaks Interstate Park. The trip again proved to be a tremendous success as one of Notre Dame's longest traditions carried on. To read Mr. Cipriano's daily blog entries from the trip and see plenty of picture of the group at work (and play), click here.

Trip participants included: Adonnis Andrade, Geovanna Badaro, David Bahr, Gabe Bitencourt, Rose Brenndan, Colin Burke, Andrew Chimento, Michelle DeLeon, Jessica Fogassa, Jenny Goldstein, Olivia Keden, Sara Keden, Caitlin Lonergan, Izzy Manzo, Alana Merly, Kate Muldoon, Mario Nunes, Michelle Onofrio, Elyse Politica, Jack Rohr, Teresa Salamone, Livia Silva, Becky Stefanatos, Morgan Sweeney, Christian Turner. Chaperones: Dan Bosco, Andrea Canuel, Fr. Peter Cipriani, Chris Cipriano, Joanna Cipriano, Justin Cirisoli, Katie Collins, Dan Combatti, Rich Combatti, Erica Macero, Paul Marzik, Jessica Medoff, Brian Mezzapelle, Josh St. Onge, Fr. Luke Suarez, Shaun Wrinn.

Summer Reading

One School, One Book

You may have heard of the One Town, One Book initiative that many local libraries have promoted over the last few years. This summer we are launching our own One School, One Book campaign to encourage conversations and develop our mission. The goal of this campaign is to get as many members of the Notre Dame community (students, parents, teachers, alumni) to read a book that relates to our mission of building character, faith, and intellect.

In our selected book, Have a Little Faith, Mitch Albom (author of Tuesdays with Morrie) writes about two men of faith. One is his childhood rabbi, a man of wit and grace who has asked Mitch to give his eulogy. The other is a Christian pastor with a troubled past and mission to serve the homeless. While the author gets to know these two men, he begins to think about his own faith.

Summer Reading List 2015

In addition to the One School, One BookHave a Little Faith by Mitch Albom:

Honors and High Honors

Additionally, students in Honors and High Honors English classes will have to choose a work of fiction or nonfiction that explores character, faith, or intellect. Some suggested titles are included below, but students may choose another comparable book. The American Library Association YALSA awards is a great place to look for titles (http://www.ala.org/yalsa/booklistsawards/bookawards). We encourage parents to work with students to find a book that is interesting and appropriate. Students will write an in-class essay on this choice during the first week of school.

Character

The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Faith

The Little Way of Ruthie Leming by Rod Dreher

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculée Ilibagiza

Intellect

The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean

Individual Courses

(Students in the following classes are also required to read an additional third book)

  • AP Humanities: How Dante Can Save Your Life by Rod Dreher

  • High Honors American Literature: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

  • AP British Literature: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Support the Wrestling Team
ND wrestling finished their first year as a program and had a fantastic season. Since the program evolved shortly before the season started, there was not sufficient time to fund raise for a wrestling mat so one was borrowed from a neighboring school and hauled back and forth numerous times. Please help ND Wrestling grow as a program by donating any amount toward the purchase of a new mat. Click here to visit the team's Go Fund Me page.

ND Apparel Available On-Line
Notre Dame and Blanchettes Sporting Goods have teamed up for our new and exciting Notre Dame online store. The link to the store can be found here or on our homepage of our website. New merchandise will continue to be added to the store so please check back often. A percentage of all sales on the online store are returned to Notre Dame. Thank you for your support.
