This Week at ND...
Seniors Visit Washington, DC
Thirty-four seniors accompanied by Mr. Carl Philipp, Miss Z, Mrs. Miller, Miss Medoff, Fr. Luke and Fr. Cip spent last weekend in Washington, DC.  After leaving ND at 6:00 am, the first stop was Baltimore and the Inner Harbor for lunch.  The group arrived at the hotel for a little rest time before going out to Union Station for dinner followed by a night tour of the city.  The group visited the Vietnam Wall, the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the Martin Luther King Memorial before returning to the hotel.

Saturday
was a very  chilly day in Washington.  Although it was not snowing like it was in Connecticut, the wind chill brought the temperature down into the 30s. The group's first stop was Arlington Cemetery to see the changing of the guard, and the graves of John, Robert and Ted Kennedy.  Then it was off to the FDR Memorial and a look around the tidal basin. Usually this area is very picturesque because of the cherry blossoms, but this year the cold weather has not allowed the cherry blossoms to bloom yet.  From there it was off to Pentagon City for lunch and time to get inside and warm up. After lunch, it was off to the Smithsonian Museums where the students could go to the museum(s) of their choice.  Some visited American History, others to Natural History and the Art Museum and Air and Space.  After the museums it was back to the hotel before going to Georgetown at night for dinner.

On Sunday
morning the group was able to have Palm Sunday Mass in the hotel with Fr. Luke and Fr. Cip concelebrating.  After Mass and breakfast, the seniors went to the Newseum.  This is a Museum dedicated to the news and the various forms of media that report the news. Some of the highlights here are parts of the Berlin Wall as well as one of the guard towers from Berlin before the wall came down.  There is an exhibit on 9-11 and how the tragedy was reported. The front pages of all newspapers are also on display and this day the Connecticut paper was the Connecticut Post. The next stop was at the White House to take pictures followed by lunch at Union Station. The afternoon was spent visiting the National Zoo and the group was able to see the pandas.  Monday morning after breakfast, the group board their bus for the ride back to Connecticut.

Religion Department Update
In Mr. Sweeney's sophomore religion classes, students are reading the Acts of the Apostles and learning about the early Church.  Their focus is on Paul's efforts in winning converts from the Gentiles and the Council of Jerusalem.

Mr. St.Onge's freshman religion classes are finishing a unit on Islam. They have been honing their close reading skills and finding similarities and differences between Islam and Catholicism.

Miss Medoff's freshman class (who are studying the Old Testament) just finished presenting their third quarter projects.  Students are getting into Exodus and learning about Moses and the Ten Commandments so this quarter they had to create their own 10 Commandments for Notre Dame.
Juniors in Miss Medoff's classes were presenting their projects, as well.  The curriculum junior year focuses on morality so students did two on two debates on contemporary moral problems such as abortion, capital punishment, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, animal testing, lowering the drinking age, legalizing marijuana, and prayer in public schools.
