Alumni Update...
Sean Conan '14 is continuing to carry on the volunteer spirit ignited at Note Dame during his Appalachia trips and various other service projects. He is the "face" of the Sacred Heart University volunteer program. Sean participated in Community Connections, a week long program with Larry Carroll in inner-city Bridgeport. During spring break, he recently completed a week-long Habitat for Humanity trip to Chicago. Lastly, Sean was asked to be the freshman class commencement speaker to welcome the Class of 2018 to SHU. He felt at ease speaking in front of over 1,400 people because of the debates from Mr. Winkler's history class and formal presentations from Dr. Callaghan's English classes. Keep up the great work, Sean!

This Week at ND...
Medieval Fair: a Trip Back in Time
On Monday, March 9, the Seniors in Dr. Callaghan's Humanities class presented their research into the life and literature of the Middle Ages at the annual Medieval Fair.  The students accomplished this not only through formal research papers but by each actually assuming the personality of a literary figure or a particular medieval person, of either high or low estate. Thus, various medieval personalities celebrated together: the Lady of the Lake, Guinevere, Morgan la Fay and Merlin from Le Morte d'Arthur, a woman of wealth and a lowly peasant, two Knights Templar, two farriers complete with anvil and furnace, a singing and story-telling troubadour, two capable alewives and Gawain himself from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. They feasted on authentic medieval fare including a chicken-root vegetable potage, dried meat, almond rice, cheddar cheese, walnuts, currants, raisins, apples, pears, wheaten breads and "sweetmeats" (cookies). Merlin entertained the guests with card tricks, the troubadour wove a tale of intrigue, and Wealth and Poverty collaborated on a wickedly satiric musical parody of which Chaucer would be proud. Surely the day added another page to the annals of these Once and Future Lancers.

Student Work in Print Making Class Mr. Testani's Print Making Class is creating multi-colored designs by creating two to three color screens and aligning the prints for each color. Above, Daniel Mendez '15 is printing and Andrew Mitchell '15 displays his robot design. Below, Hannah Spataj '15 shows off her Homer Simpson print and Emily Mobilio '15 presents her turtle print.

English Department Update

Mr. Fitzpatrick's Freshman Language Arts classes have been studying Romeo and Juliet and have been assigned technology projects to demonstrate their learning and understanding of
the play. Such examples of students' work are filmed scenes from the play, interactive jeopardy games with various categories and facts about Romeo and Juliet, electronic versions of Shakespearean sonnets, hip hop songs written and performed about Romeo and Juliet, and newspapers that take place during the Renaissance that employs the setting and the story of Romeo and Juliet as news articles. The students have put a lot of time and effort in their projects and it is evident from the wonderful and creative projects that are currently being presented in class. Mr. Fitzpatrick is looking forward to seeing the rest of the various projects in the next two weeks.

Math Department Update

Algebra I students are covering a variety of topics depending on the level. The Honors students are working on a section of rational exponents, while the college prep students are either investigating the graphs of polynomial functions or systems of equations. Geometry students are studying right triangles, including the special right triangles. The Pythagorean Theorem is studied extensively and students are introduced to basic trigonometric functions. Algebra II students are completing work with logarithms while Analysis students are completing work on polynomial and rational functions. Emphasis is

placed on using the graphing calculator to find various
characteristics of these functions.

The Notre Dame Test Center code is: 07225. Notre Dame's school code is: 070057. To see if you qualify for fee waivers, click here or you may stop by Guidance and pick up a form.

Parents of Juniors

The Guidance Department has mailed out letters to Junior parents. The college search process has begun for our Juniors. All Junior parents need to contact their child's counselor to arrange for a parent/student meeting during the school day. The meeting will include familiarizing the parent and student with our Naivance program (students use this program to search for colleges and scholarships), a review of the students semester report card, transcript, PSAT scores, SAT testing and to discuss possible senior year courses. Please call the Guidance office at (203) 372-6521 to arrange an appointment.
