Appalachia 2014 - Neon, Kentucky
From June 21-29, a group of 39 students and chaperones traveled to Neon, Kentucky for Notre Dame's 23nd annual Appalachia trip. While in Kentucky, the group worked with HOMES, Inc., a group committed to building residential housing and providing low-interest mortgages for residents of this coal-mining community. Notre Dame has worked with HOMES since 2000 (with the exception of two years spent in West Virginia).

On this year's service trip, the group of 25 students and 14 adult chaperones were assigned to one of five work sites. Projects included new home construction, painting, basement drainage repair, deck and window replacement and kitchen floor construction. The group worked daily from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm and spent Wednesday visiting a coal museum which included a visit to a former coal mine. The trip again proved to be a tremendous success as one of Notre Dame's longest traditions carried on. To read Mr. Cipriano's daily blog entries from the trip, click here.

Trip participants included: Seniors: Jessica Cannon, Sean Cronan, Winston Crumb, Mike DeGennaro, Megan Gless, Andrew Goldstein, Matt Lasky, Colleen O'Reilly, Emmett Whelan. Juniors: Adonnis Andrade, Noah Cirisoli, Michelle DeLeon, Jessica Fogassa, Sara Keden, Caitlin Lonergan, Mario Nunes, Will Peterson, Morgan Sweeney, Christian Turner, Victoria Velazquez. Sophomores: Rose Brennan, Alana Merly, Kate Muldoon, Elyse Politica, Tatiana Tozzi. Chaperones: Dan Bosco, Fr. Peter Cipriani, Chris Cipriano, Joanna Cipriano, Justin Cirisoli, Katie Collins, Dan Combatti, Rich Combatti, Katie Makara, Paul Marzik, Jessica Medoff, Brian Mezzapelle, Frank Pagliaro, Josh St. Onge.

Summer Reading and Math Packets ...

Summer reading provides an opportunity to develop critical academic and life-long learning skills and has been proven to eliminate the learning loss that happens over the summer. Our reading lists reflect a variety of writing styles and subject matter. We encourage parents and guardians to be actively engaged throughout the process and help students select appropriate and interesting books.

  • Students in College Prep English classes must read at least one book from the list. Students are required to keep a journal while reading their book.
  • Students in Honors English classes should read two titles. Students must keep a journal for one book and will be tested on the second book in the first weeks of school.
  • Students in High Honors English classes should choose three books.  Students must keep a journal for one book and be ready to be tested on the other two in the first weeks of school.

Click here for the summer reading list and journal prompts.
