... the Class of 2014. Notre Dame's 54th graduation ceremony was held on Friday, May 30, before over 1,000 family members and friends in the school's gymnasium. 92 diplomas were awarded to a class representing 32 cities and towns, plus students from Korea and China. As a whole, the graduating class earned over $12.2 million in scholarships and grants for college. Valedictorian Matt Lasky addressed his fellow classmates at graduation. Salutatorian Rachel Jankovsky gave her speech earlier in the week at Baccalaureate. Mr. Carl Philipp served as master of ceremonies for the event and the following people addressed the graduates: Superintendent Sister Mary Grace Walsh, Fairfield Town Clerk Betsy Peddle Brown '84, and principal Chris Cipriano. ND Chaplain, Fr. Peter Cipriani, was recognized with a standing ovation for his ten years of service of ND before he becomes pastor of Assumption Church this summer. The entire faculty and staff certainly wish this class well in their future endeavors. To read Mr. Cipriano's recap of graduation on his blog, click here.

Correction:

Last week's Update mistakenly listed the scholarship given to Sean Cronan from the "Fallen Heroes Society". The correct name is the "Connecticut Fallen Heroes Foundation, Inc."

Summer Reading...

Summer reading provides an opportunity to develop critical academic and life-long learning skills and has been proven to eliminate the learning loss that happens over the summer. Our reading lists reflect a variety of writing styles and subject matter. We encourage parents and guardians to be actively engaged throughout the process and help students select appropriate and interesting books.

  • Students in College Prep English classes must read at least one book from the list. Students are required to keep a journal while reading their book.
  • Students in Honors English classes should read two titles. Students must keep a journal for one book and will be tested on the second book in the first weeks of school.
  • Students in High Honors English classes should choose three books.  Students must keep a journal for one book and be ready to be tested on the other two in the first weeks of school.

Click here for the summer reading list and journal prompts.

Art Classes
3D Art

The students in Mr. Testani's 3D art class have finished the year with sculpture. The fantasy and fictitious creatures were created from clay and then dried, painted and glossed. To view more 3D art visit http://nd3d14.tumblr.com/.
From left to right: Nick Beecher '15, Marleena Reed '15 and Cassidy Taylor '15
Art History
Mr. Testani's Art History students are finishing up the year with Surrealism. The students had to visually represent a dream or nightmare they had. Surreal artists did not wish their work to make simple, logical sense. This is why many of the paintings look like scenes from a dream (or nightmare). To view more work from the Art History class go to ndart14history.tumblr.com
From left to right: Marion Gargella '16,  Eliana Otero '16, Rachael Watcke '16, Matt Merced '16 and Elaanie Jackson '16
Art and Nature Class

Mr. Testani's Art and Nature classes have hung painted pine cones outside the school in front of the main entrance to the building. The classes are finishing the year with salt paintings and organic patterned sticks.
