World History Classes Attend Museum
On May 20, students from Mrs. Fitter's High Honors and Honors world history classes attended a primary source workshop at the Fairfield Museum and History Center in Fairfield. Students listened to a lecture by Director of Education Christine Jewell and studied primary source documents on slavery in Connecticut.  In addition, docent Walter Matis '84 gave students a tour of the museum exhibit on the 375th anniversary of the Town of Fairfield.  Also included in the exhibit was history of the growth and industry of Bridgeport.  Students also visited the grounds next to the museum where Mr. Matis described the history of witchcraft trials in Fairfield. Thank you to Mr. Mildrum for helping chaperone the trip.

Sophomore Class in Philadelphia
On May 12, the sophomore class traveled to Philadelphia. After taking a quick look at the Liberty Bell, the group enjoyed lunch at the historic Bourse Building and then saw the sights of the city by road and river. A duck tour took the group throughout the former capital of the nation and into the Delaware River. Following the tour, the group visited the National Constitution Center before departing for the day. Fr. Cipriani, Ms. Zembrzuski, Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Cipriano chaperoned the trip. Special thanks to parent chaperones Nicole Chavez and Cheryl D'Aurio.

Foreign Language Department Update

French

All of the ND French classes are busy being educated by peers! It is Final French Project Presentation week, the time of the school year when every ND French student has the chance to show how much French s/he knows! And ... oui, oui (oh yes!) ...the presentations are in French!

French I students have been researching assigned French cities with great success! From northern France and the city of Lille all the way south to Avignon, Marseille, and Nice ... "La France" is being seen in all of her glory! In addition to well-prepared city highlights, students have been treated to regional delicacies such as bouillabaisse (seafood soup!), raspberry praline, French cookies, pastries, croissants, pretzels, peanut brittle, and more! A castle representing the city of Avignon was built out of craft sticks while another was made out of Legos. A train and an Eiffel Tower were also displayed, each representing major milestones in French cities.

French II students have researched their passions and have educated the class with presentations on dance, hockey, lacrosse, and softball. The class now knows how to bake chocolate chip cookies (en français!) and was instructed on the methodology of harp playing and modern day art. Brazil and the country's customs will be highlighted next week in addition to a sushi presentation followed by the art of makeup application and more!

French III students have been planning their "dream trip." From finding an airline that flies to their dream spot to purchasing tickets for flight and reserving a hotel, students have already educated us on the excitement of Disney World in Florida, the beautiful mountains of Switzerland, the city of Rome, the country of hockey: Canada, and a trip "down-under" to Australia. After the holiday weekend, we will be traveling to Jamaica, Amsterdam, and Austria. Bon voyage!

The students of French AP-IV are on their way to college! Before leaving, each presented a tri-fold, hand-made brochure ... in French ... highlighting the university where s/he will be going in addition to displaying the schools' colors and a piece of university memorabilia! Bonne chance!

Spanish

ND's World Languages have been  quite busy enhancing our diversity with various activities for the month of May. Mrs. Morales' (aka-Miss Hering) classes studied the history of El Cinco de Mayo, comparing current day celebrations in Mexico and the United States. Homemade "empanadas" were provided by Mrs. Morales' Honor class.

Miss Alberti's Spanish 1 classes went to the Bus Stop!  Bus Stop is an improvised activity to demonstrate the acquisition of feeling and emotions vocabulary in Spanish.  Students, working in pairs, interact with one another
while waiting for the bus.  Students cannot use any English equivalent of their feeling or emotion-only in Spanish.

Mrs. Guarino's Spanish 3 classes prepared detailed Travel Brochures focusing not only on cultural aspects of a particular Spanish speaking country, but implementing major grammatical content covered during the year. Upon completion, students presented their brochures orally in Spanish. We danced, we sang and even sampled some fine Spanish cuisine!

Art Classes

Mr. Testani's Art History classes are creating cubism works by Picasso.
The idea is to take a three dimensional object and flatten it out by using geometric shapes. The students worked on embossed metal and then used water color pencils to color in their image.

Students...
Class of 2017 Opportunity
Every summer, Villanova University seeks to engage freshmen students in high end programs held at the university through a partnership with the National Hispanic Institute (NHI). For 9th grade students, a special program on Villanova's campus focuses on reasoning, argumentation, and the power of communication. Students arrive at Villanova University in the Philadelphia area for a 6-day experience. The first portion of the program is spent forming teams and introductory games to get the "competition ready" for the second half of the program which is a 3-day tournament. Students work with abstract concepts and have to look at themes from multiple angles. This year the theme will be based on Ethics and Morality Among Latino Leaders. Students will explore the leadership qualities they want out of future leaders. This program is open to students of all ethnic backgrounds who have at least a GPA of 3.0 or better. Villanova University is very interested in having Notre Dame High School students join them this summer and is extending up to a $200 scholarship per student to attend the program. This would mean students would only need to cover to remaining $400 plus their travel expenses. Other programs like this can cost upwards of $3,000! Click here for more information.

ND Tutoring Center Open After School

The ND Tutoring Center is open (located in room 201A). The Center will be staffed Monday through Thursday from 2 to 3 pm. No appointments are necessary.

National Honor Society

ND's National Honor Society sponsored its final activity for the year and raised over $200 for Veterans of the Armed Services in the state of Connecticut. The donation will be added to those of all Connecticut NHS chapters who participated and a check will be presented on May 23 to the Connecticut Department of Veteran Affairs. Donations will support one of the following projects: Stand Down (helping needy veterans get back on their feet through employment, legal and medical services), Rocky Hill Veteran Home Activities (to enhance the quality of life for all veterans at the Home and Hospital), Temporary Emergency Assistance (monetary assistance in times of crisis) and the CT State Veteran Outreach and Support Services. Thank you to our National Honor Society for helping us all support our vets.

The Care Club asks for your help with two projects:
1. The Bridgeport Homeless Project will occur in early August at the University of Bridgeport at Seaside Park. Sister Eileen Boffa R.S.M. is asking for donations of (a.) book bags and back packs-any size, any condition and (b.) hand wipes and body or hand lotions (small containers). Last year's response at ND was beyond expectations. Donations can be left in the library until the last school day in June. Volunteers will also be needed to set up and/or work at various areas on the project days.

2. Mrs. Haffner has received a request for a volunteer or volunteers who would be willing to spend an hour a week with a client at the Ludlowe Health Center (adjacent to ND). The client is described as a very gregarious and bright 60 year old woman who likes to do crafts, play games and go for walks. These activities would certainly help to brighten her long days. This opportunity is open, not only to students, but also to anyone who might be interested in enjoying companionship with a lovely woman.

Both projects offer students the opportunity to gain service hours. For further information, please contact Jan Haffner either at home 203-377-4418 or leave a message at Notre Dame 203-372-6521. Thank you for caring.
ND Supports Events in the Community

Donations Needed

IronPath will be hosting a two week educational program for the high school students of New Haven. As Notre Dame alumni, Alexander Audet '13 and Theodive Tumba '13 would like to know if Notre Dame High School families would be willing to help donate non-perishable foods, primarily canned meals or gluten free products, for this summer's IronPath Program at Southern Connecticut State University. The donation would provide 30 attendees a decent meal for most of the week. IronPath is a Notre Dame alumni-created organization that seeks to help out and encourage disadvantage youth providing them with education and support in helping them to reach their goals of success. Thank you!
