Science Department Update...

Environmental Science for UConn Credit

Next year, Notre Dame will again offer Environmental Science to upperclassmen. The course is part of our UCONN Early College Experience Program of courses, where our students get college (UConn) and ND credit for a course. Last year sixteen seniors enjoyed learning about how the earth's ecosystems operate and the role humans play in the environment. Environmental Science encompasses all the other sciences and explains how they interact here on earth.

The course includes some outdoor labs and a field trip. Last year, the students went on a "behind the scenes" tour of the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk. They saw how the animals and their habitats are maintained and kept healthy. They were able to interact with several species including Arctic penguins. The animals were not only aquatic. They had re-created a South African desert environment. There students gazed amazingly at how a colony of meercats hunts, interacts and socializes in their ecosystem. The course is focused on real-life science and nature. Students who took the course last year had fun and came away with a much better understanding of how wonderfully complex the environment is. Juniors and seniors are eligible to take this high honors-level course.
