Congratulations to ...

... Hannah Maximin '14 and Jordan Genias '16 who have spent every other Saturday during the school year participating in a high school mentorship program, Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT). This program is designed to challenge students to achieve success. LOT

provides a support system for students, helping to transform them into leaders by developing their life skills - networking, interviewing and public speaking - providing cultural exposure, college preparation and scholarship opportunities through a series of workshops, tutoring and group support.

In September, Hannah and Jordan were selected from the Westchester Greater Connecticut Leaders of Tomorrow Chapter to attend the program's National Leaders of Tomorrow Success Boot Camp at the National Black MBA conference in Houston, TX. Described as an "awesome experience" by Jordan, the Boot Camp was a four day experience that focused on academic excellence, professional development, college preparation, health and fitness, leadership, and service - from work-outs at dawn to interactive workshops to leadership elections to networking with major corporations, successful business executives, academicians and policy leaders. When asked what she found to be the biggest impact from the event, Hannah said, "My most memorable moment was when I had the chance to meet Bonnie St. John, the first African American ever to win Olympic or Paralympic medals in ski racing." Only One More Week Until The Walk-A-Thon...
The Notre Dame Walk-a-thon will take place on Monday, October 28. The Walk-A-Thon is a spirit-filled day that includes a three mile walk around the ND campus as well as field day activities for our students.
This is Notre Dame's sole student fundraiser, and our goal as an ND community is to raise $25,000. With the money raised in last year's event, we were able to purchase new lockers for our students.
Please help your son/daughter reach their fundraising goal of $100 by asking friends and family for their support. Of course, if you can't raise $100, any amount raised is greatly appreciated. Don't forget, if you work for a company that participates in a matching gift program, forms can be sent to school. Credit will be given for the money donated and matched. Letters with more information including donation forms have been sent home to every family or they can be accessed below.  If you have any questions, please contact Theresa Marzik at marzik@notredame.org or 203-372-6521.  Thank you in advance for your support of our student Walk-A-Thon.

Foreign Language Department Update ...

Spanish Classes Prepare for "El Día de los Muertos"

The month of October is a busy one for our language classes. Students of Spanish are learning about and participating in the Day of the Dead celebrations and festivities.

Mrs. Guarino's Spanish 3 classes will be writing a Cinquain Poem dealing with the Day the Dead. Some of the Spanish 3 classes will make the annual Pan de los Muertos, (Bread for the Day of the Dead), while other classes will decorate paper skulls. The Spanish 4 classes, in conjunction with the Day of the Dead and Halloween, will create and decorate face masks. After painting their masks, they will then create an original story about their mask. Both their mask and story will be presented orally to the classes.

Ms. Hering's Spanish classes will be celebrating "El Día de los Muertos" by bringing in items to make a classroom representation of a traditional Día de los Muertos "ofrenda," which will be put on display in Room 305 beginning next Thursday leading up to November 2. To further assist in the preparation and celebration of this seasonal holiday, classes have been watching movie clips of real-life documentation of the holiday preparations in Mexico, coupled with a variety of projects and assignments including written reflections, individual dioramas, and even baking and sculpting traditional Mexican "calaveras de azúcar" (Candy Skulls) out of Rice Krispie Treats and decorating them with candy and frosting.

Miss Alberti's classes will be celebrating by making los cascarones, confetti-filled eggs that are cracked over a recipient's head. This can be done to wish/bring someone luck. These are popular during celebrations for birthdays, El Día de Los Muertos, Halloween, Easter and weddings.  Students will be asked to make at least two cascarones: one purely decorative, and one for smashing/cracking.  After showing their classmates their decorative cascarón, they will proceed to the smashing/cracking. The only rule - if you want to be a smasher, the you have to be a smashee. What a fun way to embrace Hispanic culture!
