Breaking the Cycle Assembly

On Tuesday, Breaking the Cycle from New York visited Notre Dame and presented an assembly to the student body about Nonviolent Conflict Resolution through Forgiveness. The group aims to stem the tide of violence by working towards its prevention. Hashim Garrett and Charles Williams spoke to the students. Mr. Garrett was paralyzed from the waist down at age 15 by a gang related shooting that almost ended his life. Mr. Williams, the former police chief of Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, shared a striking personal story about how the healing power of forgiveness positively changed his life. Both men shared moving experiences about how their lives were changed when they allowed themselves to forgive others who had hurt them in the past. Notre Dame was pleased to also welcome special guests Gary McNamara, chief of the Fairfield Police Department, and Chris Lyddy, Deputy Chief.

3D Art Classes
The 3D art class has sculpted transparent figures of themselves. Each student casted their own body parts and put them together to create a full size replica in various poses. The figures were made with clear packing tape and each had a different form to work with. Once the sculptures were completed, they were placed around the school. To visit more 3D figures, visit the online gallery.
Sculptures by (from left to right) Nick Beecher '15, Dan Walsh '14, Young-Ji Kang '14,  Kimmani Gibson '14, Amelia Li '14 and Monica Walsh '15, Cassidy Taylor '15 and Marleena Reed '15.

Campus Ministry News ...
Freshman Class Retreat
Last Friday, the Freshmen Class participated in their annual class retreat.  The morning began with breakfast, some very enthusiastic ice breaker games and Mass. Following Mass, the students were broken up into groups which were led by our Upperclassmen Leadership Team. The focus and theme of the retreat was Community and how to effectively build a positive and caring community, collectively as a class and individually as a student. The retreat concluded with a group of 2012 graduates (Theo Tumba, Alex Audet and Tyler Toto) who have formed a motivational speaking organization called Iron Path. Its goal is to reach out to young adults who are in need of positive role models, positive re-enforcement and encouragement as far as tackling the day-to-day, as well as future challenges, that invariably confront young people.  The presentation was greeted with energetic approval and appreciation.

Special thanks to Mr. St. Onge for his usual going above and beyond to insure the success of this retreat. And a further note of thanks to our trusty photographer for the event and future events, Danielle DaCosta '15, and Shannan Williams '14 for giving her personal testimony to the freshmen about overcoming personal obstacles in her life.

The following students served on the Leadership Team: Seniors: Karissa Cook, Megan Gless, Brianna Mann, Dy-mond LeRoy, Tyler Owen, Daniella Hurtado, Collin Cegelka, Matt Lasky, Winston Crumb, Mike DeGennaro, Kenneth Dubose and Hannah Maximin; Juniors:Sara Keden, James Gibson, Becky Stefanatos, Rob Ceballos, Shannan Williams, Sam DeMattio, Hannah Spataj, Cassidy Taylor, Tekarah Coward, Victoria Velazquez, Anthony DiNatale and Kenny Fann.

Hannah Rich '17, Alex D'Aurio '16, Nick DaSilva '15, Tyler DaSilva '15, Jessica Fogassa '15, and Lauren Berard '14 traveled to Danbury and participated in a Life Chain.  A Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful witness to the sanctity and beauty of all life beginning in the womb.  With others, the group lined Main Street on either side with signs reminding people of how precious the gift of life is.  A special thank you to Mrs. D'Aurio for helping to chaperone the trip.

Students to Participate in the Suicide Awareness Walk
After school on Thursday, Anne Groener whose daughter Kate graduated ND in 2008, came to Notre Dame to share her story about losing her son Christopher to suicide in 2007.  Anne was gracious enough to speak to a group of our students, mostly our Cheerleaders, who will be participating in and raising money for the Suicide Awareness Walk which will take place on Sunday, October 20 in Brookfield. The talk and video were powerful, as one can imagine, and a reminder to our students of how it is a necessity to raise awareness regarding an issue that affects us all.  If anyone will like to donate money to our walkers please contact

No size is too big or too small!  In addition, the FHS is accepting light-weight boxes of non-perishable food items (ie: macaroni, cereal, tea, coffee, etc) that will also be shipped with the clothing. The first collection box will be in Mme Zac's room - 302A.

2013 Walk-A-Thon
The annual Notre Dame Walk-A-Thon will take place on Monday, October 28. The Walk-A-Thon is a spirit-filled day that includes a three mile walk around the ND campus as well as field day activities for our students.

This is Notre Dame's sole student fundraiser and our goal as an ND community is to raise $25,000.  With the money raised in last year's event, we were able to purchase new lockers for our students.
Please help your son/daughter reach their fundraising goal of $100 by asking friends and family for their support. Of course, if you can't raise $100, any amount raised is greatly appreciated. Don't forget, if you work for a company that participates in a matching gift program, forms can be sent to school. Credit will be given for the money donated and matched. Letters with more information including donation forms have been sent home to every family or they can be accessed below.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Theresa Marzik at marzik@notredame.org  or 203-372-6521.  Thank you in advance for your support of our student Walk-A-Thon.

Bridgeport Public Library Holds Programs During Teen Read Week
The Bridgeport Public Library is offering two programs at the Broad Street location during Teen Read week. The first is Letterboxing, held on Tuesday, October 15 at 3:00 p.m. Letterboxing is quickly becoming a favorite outdoor activity in America as it has been in England. The idea is going on a treasure hunt with a purpose. Participants create code names that are used when they locate and leave their stamp on a notebook located in a hidden letterbox. Most players carry their own stamp and notebook so they can maintain personal records.

The second is Geocaching, held on Wednesday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. A limited number of GPS devices will be available for practice in the Teen Café.

For more information on library programs and other related teen interests like them on Facebook-Bridgeport Public Library Teen Cafe, or visit them on Twitter @TeenCafe925, Pinterest @BPTTeenCafe and Instragram.
Representatives from the following colleges will be available to meet with seniors the week of October 14 in Room 206

Seniors are reminded that they must sign up for these visits in Guidance at least two days prior to receive a pass. The full schedule of college visits is available on Naviance.

Twenty winners of this program will each receive $20,000 in scholarship funding for college (dispersed evenly over four-year period). Apply now until December 19. Click here for more information.
