Art Classes Begin Projects Art classes have started working on various projects. The Art and Nature class has been outside learning how to draw trees, while the Art History class is starting at the beginning of the art timeline with caveman paintings. Students have to use only four colors that were available at that time and have to use sticks to paint the images. Freshman Social Success Dozens of freshmen attended the annual Freshman Social on Thursday evening. With great weather, plenty of food, and games of wiffle ball and frisbee, those in attendance had a very enjoyable time getting to know each other. Special thanks to the following parents who helped run the event: Kathy Stefanatos, Marianne Cassidy, Linda Dobbins, Denise Gagne and Cheryl D'Aurio. Back to School Mass Notre Dame celebrated our annual Back to School mass on Friday morning in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on the campus of Sacred Heart University. Fr. Cipriani and Fr. Bill concelebrated the mass and each provided a great welcome to the students and faculty at the start of the new academic year. Special thanks to the following students who assisted with mass: Lauren Berard '14, Sean Cronan '14, Dy-Mond Leroy '14, Kevin Bradley '14, Christian LaCroix '14, Greg Ferris '14, Colleen O'Reilly '14, Jessica Cannon '14, Megan Gless '14, Alexandra D'Aurio '16 and Jonathan Suporn '15. In addition, special thanks to Mr. St.Onge and the Chorus for sharing their musical talents with the school community and to the parents and grandparents who joined us for mass.

News From the Chaplain ...

ND Alumni Travel to Alaska
On August 4, a group of Notre Dame alumni traveled to Anchorage, Alaska on a mission trip. Despite the breathtaking and spectacular landscape of this Last Frontier state, Alaska is an extremely poor state. In addition to the poverty, and even sadder still, Alaska, especially in the Anchorage area, is notorious for having one of the highest child abuse and abduction rates in the country. The ND group was assigned to a trailer park, whose playground consisted only of a slab of pot holed pavement. Each day, 30 to 40 kids, from age three to teenagers, would come running to our location and, despite the lack of swings, happily turned each member of the group into human jungle gyms. Being out of school, where meals are provided for these kids, the ND alumns prepared and served lunch to the children every day. Following lunch, the kids would sit down and in pairs each member of the ND group was responsible for teaching the kids a Gospel Value lesson from Scripture. Following Bible story share time, the group would engage the kids in an arts and crafts-like activity that would help to re-enforce the Gospel message for that day in a more visible and practical way. ND also had a few opportunities to minister to families in the surrounding area, by way of preparing dinners and hosting park "carnivals". Many of these families confront the struggles of self destructive depression and the drug and alcohol culture on a daily basis. When not ministering to the needs of the people, the group also had quality time to see the awesome sites of Alaska, even having the opportunity to have a snow ball fight in August. We are very grateful to the many people who both financially and through prayer supported our Mission and made this incredible experience possible. A very special thank you to the intrepid Missionaries: Jessica Medoff, Brittany Barstein, Dianne Gutierrez, Christina Rodriguez, Eleni Stefanatos, James Piazza, Rachel Dorosh, Jessica Ormrod, Brian Mezzapelle and Fr. Cip.
The Forty Day Worship Initiative
From September 4 to October 14, 2013, there will be 40 gatherings over 40 consecutive days at 40 plus locations across the state of Connecticut. The Body of Christ throughout Connecticut will gather each evening for 40 days, to exalt Jesus as Lord and asking for His kingdom to come to our state. On Monday evening, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. all people of all faith backgrounds are invited to gather at Christ the King Parish in Trumbull for a night of contemporary praise and worship music, concluding with intercessory prayer for our state.
Celebration of Mass
Reminder: Mass is celebrated daily in Notre Dame Chapel at 7:30 am and ends before 7:50. All students and family members are welcomed to attend any time. What better way to begin a demanding day than with prayer!

ND Drama Club Spring Musical Announced ...
|
It was announced earlier this week that the spring musical for the 13-14 school year will be Hairspray, which is based on the 1988 John Waters film. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues.
The story takes place in 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, when teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes an overnight celebrity. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s. The musical's original Broadway production opened in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards out of thirteen nominations.
Auditions will take place on October 9 and 10. Performances will be held on May 9 and 10, 2014 at the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart University. All students are encouraged to audition for the play. Please contact Mr. St. Onge or Mrs. Marzik with any questions or for more information.

Open House Lawn Signs Are In...
|
Operation Lawn Sign
With Notre Dame's annual Open House right around the corner, we would like to solicit everyone's help in spreading the word to prospective families. In an effort to get the word out, we have purchased several hundred Open House lawn signs. The goal for this campaign is to get a sign on the front lawn of 100% of our families. This campaign will increase our school's awareness in local communities, and bring more prospective families to the forefront. The campaign involve the following steps:
- Email Gaetano Marra, Director of Admissions, at marra@notredame.org
- Request your lawn sign to be picked up in his office at your convenience, or give permission for us to place the sign on your lawn. (Yes, he will come to you!)
- Once the lawn signs are up, we are asking families to take a photo in front of the sign, and email that back to Mr. Marra.
- We will be getting these photos on all of our social media networks, and work towards continuing to grow our enrollment.
- We request that all signs be returned the week after Open House, which is Sunday, October 20th.
Remember, our goal is 100% participation. Can you help?
Mr. Marra looks forward to hearing back from all of our families. With your help, we will continue to grow our school and show local families just how phenomenal a Catholic education at Notre Dame truly is.
