Students Attend Performance of
On April 10, the seniors in Dr. Callaghan's AP Humanities and the sophomores in Mr. Sulzycki's British Literature attended a performance of Hamlet at the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven. Staged on a spare, minimalist set and in contemporary dress, this production featured a frenetic, ranting, brooding, comic, desperate, antic disposition of Hamlet. Paul Giamatti commanded the stage throughout and shuttled the audience from humor to heartbreak and back again with energetic passion.
The general consensus afterwards was that this was a compelling Hamlet not soon forgotten. Perhaps the most fitting comment was made by one of the seniors: "We are always taught in class that, for Shakespeare, it's all in the language. Today I really heard it!"
This opportunity was made available by WillPower! an annual Shakespearean outreach to local high schools, sponsored by the Yale Repertory Theatre's Department of Education. We have already reserved tickets for next year's musical production of Much Ado about Nothing.
Science Students Visit the Maritime Center
Mr. Salce's UCONN ECE Environmental Science Class took a field trip to the Maritime Center in Norwalk for a "behind the scenes tour". Students were able to see, learn about and even touch a wide variety of aquatic animals including: sting rays, African penguins, a pair of sea otters, poison Dart Frogs, Great White Sharks, sea anemone, Giant Jelly Fish, Clown Fish, and "Princess" the nine foot Nurse Shark, who some chose to pet.
In addition to sea life, the center also had an exhibit of playful South African Meer cats. As the trainer evacuated
the "cats" into a backroom at feeding time, she explained that they don't just want to be fed the insect larvae, they want to hunt and dig for it. So while the animals impatiently waited in a holding pen out of sight, the Trainers buried and hid their lunch in the hollow logs and under sand and rocks that made up their desert habitat. When the Meer cats returned, they delighted everyone to a frenzied Easter egg hunt for lunch. The tour also took us behind the scenes where food is prepared for the animals and where sick animals are held and treated. Everyone snapped dozens of photographs of some of the most beautiful and intriguing animals. Some are found in our backyard (Long Island Sound) and others on the other side of the world. |

Life-Changing Summer Camp Opportunity for Youth Making a Difference! Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp is a unique and inspiring leadership summer camp for youth between the ages of 12-17 who care about community service, activism, and social justice. At a week-long sleep-away program in a beautiful camp setting, YEA campers choose an issue of importance to them and build the knowledge, skills, confidence, and community to take action on that issue once they get home. Campers also build lifelong friendships between youth with similar interests in bettering their community and society. Youth who have participated in the program report that the camp was one of the most fun, memorable and life-changing experiences they have had, and, with YEA's support, many have gone on to start school clubs, plan fundraisers for nonprofits, organize a call-in to Congress, and attend hearings to comment about important community issues. Check out a short video or website to learn more about this unique program.
