Art Classes Create Artist Globes
Tyanna Palmer '13
Earl Coleman '13
The latest art project in Mr. Testani's art class had students creating artist globes. Each student chose an artist and style to represent and created a globe to represent their work. The Globes can be seen hanging in the Library/Media Center or online. Click here to view images of their globes.

Junior Class Retreat
On Tuesday, the Junior Class participated in their class retreat, which was hosted by Bryan Mercier. Bryan is an outstanding, animated, inspiring and highly motivational speaker. The day was filled with informative talks regarding the importance and practicality of faith in the life of a teenager, interspersed with fun activities that allowed the Juniors to enjoy a good, solid class bonding day.  Perhaps the highlight of the day was when the Blessed Sacrament was exposed.  The students participated in a Holy Hour that allowed them some peace, quiet and calm to reflect on their lives and to connect with Christ on a deeper level. The Sacrament of Reconciliation was offered during this time in the Chapel. The day concluded outside where the students enjoyed a little more fun, but this time, in the sun. Special thanks to Mr. St. Onge and especially Bryan Mercier for making the retreat such a special and uplifting day.

Softball Team Prepares Dinner for Shelter
On Wednesday, members of the softball team prepared and helped serve dinner to a group of women at the Martha's Place women's shelter in New Haven.  The women were greatly appreciative of both the food and company. Special thanks to all the super moms who helped prepare the dinner, especially Mrs. Yellen.  And a special thank you to Mrs. Stefanatos for assisting with cooking and chaperoning duty.  After the dinner service, the Lady Lancers enjoyed a bite to eat at Pepe's, followed by some delicious Italian ices and cannolis. Thank you to the following girls for participating in the service event: Megan Gless '14, Jess Romano '13, Michelle Scatamacchia '13, Katie Yellen '13, Becky Stefanatos '15, Laura Pekar '13, and Taylor Springer '13.

Junior Class Mass
On Friday, the junior class celebrated mass together in the Chapel. Last Friday, the seniors did so. The sophomores and then the freshmen will celebrate class masses after vacation. These Friday gatherings are a perfect opportunity for students to gather with their peers in a prayer way. Special thanks to Fr. Cipriani and Fr. Bill for celebrating the masses.

Care Club is Collecting Hand Wipes / New or Used Backpacks
The Care Club has one more project for the school year. Sister Eileen Boffa, R.S.M. has requested some help in her mission with the homeless. She would appreciate donations of hand wipes and back packs (new or used - no matter how poor the condition). Students can leave donations in Religion classes or in the main office. If you have any questions, leave a message for Mrs. Haffner at school. The drive ends May 31. Again, thank you for caring.

Opportunities ...
Interested in becoming a Host Family for an International ND student?
New ND students from South Korea are looking for warm and caring host families. They are interested in staying with host families because they want to learn more about American culture and to practice their English in an authentic atmosphere. By becoming a host family, you will not only give a student the chance to experience daily American life, but will also provide your family an opportunity to learn about another culture without having to leave your home.

An appropriate Host Family will
1. Have an open mind towards a different culture and be ready to learn about it.
2. Be able to provide a private room (a bathroom may be shared) for the student.
3. Be able to accept and take care of the student just like your own children, which includes:
  • providing a safe and comfortable environment,
  • providing 3 adequate meals and appropriate snacks each day, and
  • providing rides to and from school and activities and/or for essential shopping

We understand that sharing your home with a stranger is not easy, and your offering cannot be easily measured. However, as a gesture in appreciation of your hospitality, JY Education will contribute a monthly stipend (currently between $1,000-$1,200) to the host family.

If you are interested, please use contact information below:

At 7:00 pm in Room 201A, Mr. Grimes, who is nationally known as an Internet Safety expert and has appeared on the Today Show, will present to parents. This presentation is geared toward the parents of young people who utilize social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Mr. Grimes will provide the audience with an explicit understanding of what children and teens are commonly doing daily on the internet, which many parents may not be fully aware. Innocent behaviors such as "status updates" and photo posting are discussed. Mr. Grimes explains how to: find your child on MySpace and Facebook, find your child's friends on the sites, navigate MySpace and Facebook, understand potential life threatening scenarios: if you think you're child is safe, think again. Additional topics include: innocent behaviors that predators utilize to plan the perfect ambush, how to talk to your child about the internet and the associated dangers, what questions to ask about MySpace and Facebook, and offer alternatives to blocking social networking sites.
