Medieval Fair 2013
Seniors in Dr. Callaghan's  AP Humanities class left the twenty-first century for a few hours and took up residence in the British Middle Ages. All levels of society were represented as each citizen took his or her place at the medieval table. Three crusaders, a monk, a farrier, a court dancer, an alchemist, an actor and even an unfortunate plague victim feasted with royalty-Queen Guinevere, Sir Lancelot. King Arthur and Sir Gawain's Green Knight.

The menu featured dishes and ingredients available to the fourteenth-century English: kitchen: chicken-barley pottage, cheddar cheese and dried meats, nuts, dried plums and apricots, fresh jams and brown, white and oaten breads. Beverages of choice were mead or ginger ale. The end of the meal was sweetened by apple-oat crisp, blueberry-walnut shortbread and spiced cakes.

Throughout the fair, the participants presented their research on the personalities and social positions of their characters. By means of a formal annotated bibliography and an audio-visual presentation, each student brought us squarely into the medieval context.  Having been led in some Gregorian chant by the monk and a country round by the dancer, we brought the fair to a close with an original screenplay of the ongoing quest for the Holy Grail. Surely some residents of Fairfield County might have been somewhat startled by the sight of three fully-attired knights seeking their treasure at a local McDonald's, on a Bridgeport city bus and around the campus of Fairfield University! Click here to view more pictures from the event.

Care Club Visits Day Care
Fifteen members of the Care Club visited the Grasmere Day Care Center this week. Between working on puzzles, playing cards and dancing with the clients, everyone had a great learning and fun experience. We were also happy to see two aides who have connections with ND--Ms. Nixon, mother of Tekarah Coward '15 and David Walsh-Magner '02 who give their all to make the clients' days enjoyable. Another group will be going to the Center on April 8 for a "Casino Day" - bingo and cards - excellent stimulation exercises for all. Thank you, again, to Mr. Peter Philipp's classes who made beautiful St. Patrick's Day cards!

Ginger Katz
Ginger Katz recently spoke with the student body and shared her story about the loss of her son to drugs. Ginger's powerful message made an impact upon the our community, as she spoke from the heart and shared the tremendous impact the death of her son had upon her and her family, all while encouraging students to avoid the mistakes her son made.

Life-Changing Summer Camp Opportunity for Youth Making a Difference!
Youth Empowered Action (YEA) Camp is a unique and inspiring leadership summer camp for youth between the ages of 12-17 who care about community service, activism, and social justice. At a week-long sleep-away program in a beautiful camp setting, YEA campers choose an issue of importance to them and build the knowledge, skills, confidence, and community to take action on that issue once they get home. Campers also build lifelong friendships between youth with similar interests in bettering their community and society. Youth who have participated in the program report that the camp was one of the most fun, memorable and life-changing experiences they have had, and, with YEA's support, many have gone on to start school clubs, plan fundraisers for nonprofits, organize a call-in to Congress, and attend hearings to comment about important community issues. Check out a short video or website to learn more about this unique program.

Student Journalism Internship
Time Warner and Digital Scout have partnered to create an internship program for students interested in sports journalism. This program will allow students to learn more about sports journalism (writing, shooting, editing, social media, play by play, radio and much more)...all while covering their favorite local teams and getting their work featured on a nationally-viewed website. Check out the program's website at www.teamhsgc.com.

Easter Items Due By Monday, March 18
The Key Club drive to make Easter baskets for Sr. Theresa's children is underway.  We are aiming to make 150 baskets. If anyone is able to donate chocolate eggs, chocolate Easter bunnies, jelly beans or any other items that we can put in the baskets, we would greatly appreciate it. We are in need of baskets or containers that could serve as Easter baskets as well as cellophane. We do have enough Easter grass, but we would be grateful for any donations. If anyone would rather buy a pre-made basket, we would also accept those. Donations are needed by March 18th. All donated items can be brought to Miss Z's room (102).  Thank you for your generosity and helping us to make Easter brighter for children who might not get an Easter basket.

Diaper Drive Extended

The Care Club is asking for your help in providing diapers, a very important necessity for Caroline House, an education center run by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The center offers women, without regard to race, religion or ethnic background, tuition-free opportunities to learn English as a second language, basic computer and life skills. Their young children attend an on-site pre-school program while their mothers attend classes. This prepares the children for successful entry into English-only kindergartens. One of the greatest needs each day are--DIAPERS!!! We would appreciate donations of coupons, diapers or money. Checks can be made out to Caroline House and given to Mrs. Ezepchick in the office. Other offerings can be deposited in the library from now until March 25. Thank you for caring.
