Science Department Spotlight
After completing a unit on population dynamics, including the factors influencing the rise and fall of animal populations, the UConn-certified Environmental Science class focused on a current problem: the global decline of amphibian populations including some facing possible extinction.
Students viewed a documentary film focusing on the problem aired by the National Geographic Society and followed up with research on the natural and man-made factors contributing to the problem. They discovered that science is just beginning to understand how unique and valuable these animals are. For example, a new family of pain relieving drugs was discovered a few years ago which is produced by a species of frogs. The pain reliever isolated from the skin of these frogs is a medical miracle. The compound is more potent than morphine, but, unlike morphine, is not addictive. The species of frogs that produces this is now threatened by a lethal fungus infection. This fungus, which is spreading rapidly in tropical and subtropical regions, may be related to recent climate changes and human development in the areas where these frogs live.
To increase awareness of this problem, the class produced a series of Podcasts designed to inform the public. If these animals are lost, we may never know what other beneficial discoveries they hold. The good news is there are efforts in several countries to capture and save these animals before they disappear. If a cure for this deadly skin fungus is found, they can then be released back into the wild. To listen to a sample of one of these Podcasts click here.

Care Club Sponsors Diaper Drive
The Care Club is asking for your help in providing diapers, a very important necessity for Caroline House, an education center run by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The center offers women, without regard to race, religion or ethnic background, tuition-free opportunities to learn English as a second language, basic computer and life skills. Their young children attend an on-site pre-school program while their mothers attend classes. This prepares the children for successful entry into English-only kindergartens. One of the greatest needs each day are--DIAPERS!!! We would appreciate donations of coupons, diapers or money. Checks can be made out to Caroline House and given to Mrs. Ezepchick in the office. Other offerings can be deposited in the library from March 11 to March 18. Thank you for caring.

Easter Items Due By March 18

The Key Club drive to make Easter baskets for Sr. Theresa's children is underway. We are aiming to make 150 baskets. If anyone is able to donate chocolate eggs, chocolate Easter bunnies, jelly beans or any other items that we can put in the baskets, we would greatly appreciate it. We are in need of baskets or containers that could serve as Easter baskets as well as cellophane. We do have enough Easter grass, but we would be grateful for any donations. If anyone would rather buy a pre-made basket, we would also accept those. Easter is early this year so we request donations by March 18th. All donated items can be brought to Miss Z's room (102). Thank you for your generosity and helping us to make Easter brighter for children who might not get an Easter basket.
