Thank You ...

... to Taylor Chavez '13 and Aly Furguiele '13 who attended the Fairfield Rotary Club meeting on Monday. Taylor and Aly gave members an overview of their ND experience and an overview of their college opportunities.

Katie Yellen ... to Katie Yellen '13, who, on Saturday December 22 volunteered at Edmund Town Hall in Newtown. Katie and some of her family, students from Groton and artists from Stonington, helped children create holiday ornaments. Christina Scala, an art teacher in Groton (Katie's cousin), arranged for an afternoon of healing through art with the children of Newtown. Katie made snowflake ornaments with the kids and had a full table for hours. The goal of the day was to offer a break for the families to enjoy some crafts and let the kids just have a little messy fun. We hope it helped just a little that day.

Security Update

In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Notre Dame, like schools across the nation, has launched a thorough review of all our security procedures, to ensure that our students remain safe while in our building. On Monday, Mr. Cipriano and Mr. Kevin Philipp, Dean of Students, attended a Security Symposium held for educators and law enforcement personnel, and received valuable information which will be integrated into our security protocols. On Thursday, our entire building participated in a lock down drill, allowing us to continue to assess our procedures. We will be working with Town of Fairfield officials to ensure that we continue to do all that we can do for the safety of our students and staff.

Students Out in the Community

Students Volunteer at the Malta House
On Wednesday, January 9, the following students visited the Malta House in Norwalk: Juliette Rivera '13, Dan Murphy '13, Ashley Maitland '15, Patrice Lauture '15, and Daniella Hurtado '14. The Malta House is a shelter for pregnant women and women who have recently given birth to assist them in their needs due to the difficulties of their position.  In addition to providing food and a place to stay, Malta House also provides an educational and spiritual development program for those staying at the shelter. The goal is to better prepare these women and their children for the challenges that will confront them once they leave the house. The students began the evening with Mass in the Malta House Chapel followed by a dinner with the women, children, staff and board members of Malta House. Quality play time with the kids was also enjoyed.

New Orleans Mission Trip

During the Christmas Break, the following ND alumni, along with Fr. Cipriani, lparticipated in a Mission Trip to New Orleans: Eleni Stefanatos '10, James Piazza '08, Brian Mezzapelle '10, Dianne Gutierrez '11, Margie Kuntz '12, Corrina Santos '12, Jaclyn Campos '10, Connor Terry '12, Ally Cryan '12 and Brittany Barstein '11. The week was spent preparing food and distributing it to the various homeless in the area in addition to passing out clothing, much of which took place around area bridges and underpasses.  Mass was celebrated every day in the house where we stayed.

Alumni also had the opportunity to help with other projects. They helped local residents move, assisted at a shelter and met with clients who are struggling to remain clean and sober.  They also helped to prepare for the opening of a thrift store at the shelter which will help with the financial demands of the shelter.  Alumni also met with a family in the 9th Ward who is opening a shelter for local teens who are in need of guidance and support from drug and violent culture.  The 9th Ward, which was completely flooded by Hurricane Katrina, was the hardest hit area of the city.

Alumni also had the opportunity to take in some local entertainment during their visit. They went on an awesome swamp tour, attended a New Orleans Saints football game and went on various tours of beautiful downtown N'arleans. A very special thank you to Hannah, our outstanding team leader from Georgia and Jessica Medoff for her always amazing adult supervision.

26 Acts of Kindness Update

Notre Dame's campaign to complete 26 different acts of kindness kicked into high gear this week. Thank you to everyone who donated cat and dog food and to the students who donated loose change and dollar bills for the Sandy Hook Relief Fund. We have hundreds of cans of animal food which will be donated to an animal shelter in Fairfield and nearly $200 will be sent to the United Way. In addition, on Monday, students wrote thank you letters to a former or current teacher who has impacted their life. Hundreds of these letters were delivered to ND staff and hundreds of other letters were mailed to former teachers. To view the complete 26 Acts Campaign calendar, click here. Our campaign will resume after mid-terms on Tuesday, January 22.

Art Classes Create Variety

Mr. Testani's art classes are working on a principal of art known as Variety, which is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer's attention and to guide the viewer's eye through the artwork.
The pieces are sketched in a book and then they proportionally had to reproduce their work smaller on a post card.

To the left, Juliette Rivera '13 creates a piece called "The galaxy is ours."
