Trends in Diamond Cutting

In the past diamonds were cut to retain weight. Today CUT is king. A diamond that gets a "fair" cut grade can be worth as little as half the price!!! Cutters have to work much harder to get better cuts. Diamonds are now cut to an ideal cut .90 rather than an off cut 1ct.

Did you know a rough diamond will loose 40-70% of its weight in the cutting process?

   Ideal Cut Diamonds

Today all cuts are measured by computer. This does not make the cutter's job easier, says veteran cutter Moshe Schwartz of 47th street. Today the cutting must be much more precise because of the huge demand for Ideal.

Can CUTTING A DIAMOND Change It's Color?
color goia dscale
Yes, color can change. When an old cut is cut into a modern cut it can bring out more color. In older cuts open culets and unpolished girdles let color leak through, making a diamond look whiter. Color does not always change in re-cuts, but there are always risks, so keep this in mind.

"DIAMONDS ALL
LOOK THE SAME WHEN YOU
SQUINT!"

I really enjoyed diamond cutter Bill Bray's article in the DiamondPulse. He talks about how the
'Best cut diamond is the one the customer just bought!" and I agree. Customers are obsessed with cut these days, even paying up to 15% more for what they are told is a premium cut. I like nice cuts too, but....

Is it worth the Extra Money?
Bill mentions a GIA study where researchers had to pick the best cuts just by looking, no loupe. The result? There was no convincing evidence that the better cut was the BEST LOOKING diamond. What about brightness? Brightness is way more important and is not listed on any cert!

 Who's IDEAL do You Want?
When a customer asks for Ideal cut. Do they mean Tolkosky Ideal? AGS Ideal? GIA Ideal? Did you know they each have a different standard of WHAT IS IDEAL!?

  When they ask for XXX?
If a customer demands GIA triple Ex and you don't have one, there are 3 options. #1 Call Aleah to send you one. #2 Carry your OWN in house 'brand of ideal'. Call it the Eternal Sparkle collection or something like that. It is much cheaper than paying for a known brand and most customers do not know the difference. #3 Maybe try to convince them that a great deal on a well cut diamond can be JUST as beautiful. After all, you can give all the dimensions of a woman and that still will not tell you if she is beautiful. The same as with a diamond.

Jewelers! Think BIG......DIAMOND SALES.
Selling High Ticket Jewelry.
Last year a smart jeweler realized they were selling less big ticket items. Instead of just blaming the economy and focusing on even lower ticket items, they decided to actively combat this problem. They began featuring higher ticket items in their ads. They showed higher end more expensive pieces in their monthly emails. And what do you know? They had two $10,000 sales this season! The key is to #1 Don't be afraid to push and show expensive items and #2 Make it a priority.

Some jewelers are scared that if they feature a $10,000 necklace in an ad that they will get less business then if they feature a $200 bracelet that everyone can afford. However, if all you advertise is $200 items you will never get the big sale. If you show a beautiful expensive piece it makes your store look good and everyone will want to come to you! Won't you rather sell one big item then a bunch of smaller ones?

Here is an idea....Sell to people that have money!!!
People who like luxury want what others can't have, so if the economy is bad, it just makes people want high-end items even more! Carry, promote, and show high ticket items and you will sell more high ticket items! - Aleah

TIPS to help SELL BIG ITEMS
Inventory If you do not have the money to invest in high ticket items, try investing in one piece at a time. Once you sell one, use the money to re-invest in another. Hopefully this will slowly help you build you inventory. Start out with a safe high end piece like a Riviera necklace or big diamond studs

Make it personal. Call your high end customers. Email them special personal pictures of jewelry you think they will like. Make house calls. Write them long Christmas and thank you cards.

Show high end pieces to EVERYONE! If someone comes in for a watch battery they should still try on a $10,000 necklace. They will for sure leave the store talking about it hopefully to their friends. You can even take a picture of them in the piece for them to post on their facebook page!

Visibility Have at least one killer piece. Put it in the front of the store or where ever it will get the most visibility.
