My Grandpa, Miller Siegel
worked in our family jewelry
store till he was 95. He passed
away this week at 98. He was a great man and a great jeweler. Here are some lessons we could
all benefit from
....

A customer would ask my grandpa "Miller. How much to replace this tiny diamond?" Miller would answer "$50....$25 for the Diamond and $25 for the diamond I LOSE replacing your diamond!"

My Grandpa told me this joke:

jeweler goes to a diamond dealers office and sees piles of diamonds. "Wow, you have SO many diamonds! You must be a great salesman." "Not really" replies the diamond dealer. "But the guy who sells

TO me...NOW THERE is a great salesman!"

Growing up in the family jewelry store I would ask "Hey Grandpa what color is this diamond?" And he would answer, "That Diamond? Looks like the color is some where between  SH and I T "

People LOVE a story. Sell your story, not just your jewelry. The better you deliver your story, the better your customer feels about their purchase, and the less price matters.

My dad had the clever idea to have a story attached to each piece of jewelry in the case. Then when staff shows a piece there is already be a story to help romance the item.

My Grandpa went down hill skiing every year until he was 87. He traveled the world with his loving wife Leslie. He ate the freshest food and drank the world's best Scotch. Living a good life will help you in business as well! The more you do, the more people, i.e. potential customers, you will meet. The more you do, the more you learn. Grow in your interests and in your life and you will see your business grow as well!

I recommend a book called "The Go GIVER".
It teaches how when you give in life and in business, you get in return! My family jewelry store hosts a Mother's Day Brunch every year for over 200 mothers of foster children. This is a great way to give back to the community and to get your store name noticed.

A great way to see returns from partnering with a charity is if you can get THEM TO EMAIL THEIR FOLLOWERS. For example if you had the Breast Cancer foundation send an email to their members saying that they will get a free pin and $20 donated to help fight breast cancer with every purchase they make at your store.

Why Older Diamonds are Off Color?
Most of the white diamonds we get today come from Southern Africa.
Older diamonds mostly came from Brazil and Venezuela. The diamonds
from these mines tend to be darker in color.

Why we Love Old Cuts.
Modern stones are cut for brilliance while in older stones light comes
in and your eye is more drawn into the stone; but collectors
have grown to love this softer, simpler path of light.

A laser drill is a permanent process and does not alter the weight of  the diamond as much as .001 carats. The process bleaches internal black imperfections by a chemical process done through a 20-25 micron channel created by a focuses laser or infrared energy.

This process is permanent, leaves no residue, and does not change the weight of the diamond. This process should not be confused with 'Yehuda'  treatments, which involve infusion of foreign material into a natural diamond. Such treatments as fracture filled are not permanent and the infused foreign substance might possibly melt through the applicatio
