way to deal with unpleasant things

is with HUMOR.

Jewel thief leaves her name!

The  woman grabbed a tray of jewelry and ran, but when she came in the store she had given her name and address to the jewelry store clerk. She was arrested at home and the jewelry was recovered.

FACEBOOK BUST!
A man steals an engagement ring from Zales. After he proposes to his fiance, excited about her ring, she posts  pictures of the ring on Facebook. Vermont police matched the pictures with thpicture of the stolen ring.

Security Ideas?
light bulb idea
What about two codes
 for opening the safe?
One code when entered will open the safe, but calls the police. Also, what about a camera that takes a picture of everyone who comes in. Most people
 like getting there picture
taken and it will certainly
deter criminals.

RECOVERY
Anger, fear, & sadness are natural. Denise was kind enough to share a coping tip. She constantly pictured the man holding the gun to her head. She would see his face in her head over and over, Denise was advised to try to replace the image in her head of the assailant with the face of a loved one. Or make his face into a bobble head! I think this technique is great an could be helpful in many painful circumstances.

      ALERT!

Our insurance agent

asked us to remind jewelers to be

FULLY & COMPLETELY INSURED. Especially when inventory spikes. We know too many jewelers who have been hurt by being underinsured. What about Christmas memo? What if you have a trunk show? Are you covered for that big necklace you got in for a customer? Know the answers! It could be a game changer.

Call your agent now!

#1 Give in.

The robber will try to scare you, just try to be calm and do exactly as you are told.

#2 Where is your Alarm?

Denise from Linnea Jewelers wears an alarm on her all times. Another good place is right by the safe, so if the bastards force you to open the safe, you can easily trigger the alarm. (Remember if there is any chance you put yourself in danger by pushing the alarm DO NOT do it. Jewelers Mutual says to not hit your panic button until the robber has left and you've locked all of the doors. You run the risk of police coming when the robbers are there resulting in a possible hostage situation.

#3 Have Code Words.

Have a code word to alert staff when someone looks suspicious. For example "Get me the blue box

#4 Don't buzz them in.
You have the right not to buzz someone in.
Your safety is first. I know jewelers who have a tiny 2 inch sign at the bottom of the door saying "by appointment only" This legally allows you not to let someone in.

#5 Community!
If someone looks suspicious, it might help to get more people in the store to keep watch and hopefully deter the crime. Talk to your neighbors. Ask them to be on call for you. If someone looks suspicious call your neighbors and ask them to come in for 5 min as an extra pair of eyes, or to stand at the door or outside. Talk to other jewelers in your area. Set up an email system to alert each other to possible scams and threats.

  LESSONS FROM LINNEA

Despite taking numerous security precautions & being located in an extremely low crime area, two armed robbers attacked Denise Linnea in the middle of the day. To learn from her story click here.

Denise says one of the things that helped her was having Jewelers Mutual list of what to do in case of a robbery located where her & her staff could see it every day. This reminded her to stay calm and be cooperative. Denise even went as far as calling the attacker "Sir". Denise said she believes this helped the attacker feel calmer and more in control. "It is paramount to focus on personal safety" says Denise.

Another lesson Denise learned the hard way is that customer's jewelry is by far the most important. Repairs & appraisal jewelry have a large emotional expensive that out weighs any numerical value.

LESSONS FROM ALEX

Alex of Martin's Jewelry has good advice.

Most robberies are planned, meaning that they have cased the store in advance. If you see anyone acting fishy, make eye contact with them at all times.
Try to convey you know what they are up to. A regular customer thinks of that as an aggressive salesman looking to make a sale, but a caser can't wait to get out of there. It might make them think twice.

Also never let strange people use the bathroom, even ones with children who supposedly have to go. It could be a preclude to that casing strategy and they want to see "the back" rooms.
Just tell people it's for "employees only."
