MYTHS ABOUT TREATED DIAMONDS
Laser Drilled Diamonds
Laser drilling doesn't alter the weight of a diamond.
Drilling is done on a microscopic level and
does not alter the weight even as much as .001 carats.
This process is permanent.
A laser is used to bleach an internal black inclusion. No substance is added.
Irradiated Diamonds
Color treating diamonds has been around since the 1940's. Blue, yellow, and green are the most common colors. Pink are very rare even in irradiated diamonds and fetch a high price. High energy particles are used to change a diamond's color. These diamonds are SAFE. There is no risk of radiation. The color will not wear or scratch off, but one must be careful with extreme heat. Extreme heat could dull or change the color.

Infusion "Coated" Diamonds
Diamonds undergo a form of ion induction color treatment that results in a coating on the pavilion that reflects a natural looking color throughout the diamond. The benefit of infusion diamonds is it is the least expensive way to get a pink diamond. A 1ct Pink Infusion can be $2k while an Irradiated pink can $9k, and Natural Pink can be $50k. However there are serious risks to color loss. If the diamond scratches the color can scratch. Also some chemicals can cause the color to fade. Ultra sonic is not recommended. Make sure your customer is fully aware of these risks.

Clarity Enhanced Diamonds
I've heard many misconceptions about clarity enhanced diamonds.
MYTHS
- They are NOT more fragile. A clarity enhanced diamond is just as strong and durable as any other diamond. The existence of microscopic amounts of filling material will not make the diamond more prone to breaking.
- The diamond's structure is not changed. Think of the glass filler they use on windshields. The diamond still has inclusions, but now you just can't see them.
- Enhancement is not affected by time.
- Ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning, or boiling water will NOT affect the enhancement. It will not come out in your hot tub.
- ONLY direct heat of a torch or strong acids can damage the treatment.
- What if the enhancement DOES come out? So what? Re-treating a diamond is very inexpensive and easy. The company you bought it from should do it for free. If not it ONLY costs around $50 to re-treat it.

HPHT DIAMOND TREATMENT

HTHP simply mimics the same diamond process as if the diamonds had remained underground in specific conditions for a much longer period of time. High-pressure high-temperature treatment is most often used to make diamonds whiter, but can also result in colored diamonds. HPHT is permanent and therefor costs more than irradiated or clarity enhanced. The diamond can even be re-cut.

 Meet Louise....
Louise sells A LOT of clarity enhanced diamonds
Great Idea from Louise
On How to Sell Treated Diamonds:
"I just purchased a rough diamond and plan to display it in my diamond case. When someone says "I want a natural diamond" I'm going to show them the rough diamond and ask them if that is what they really want? Then I plan to tell them if that is not what they are looking for, then they might want to consider an enhanced diamond. Explaining to them "Whatever is done to make the diamond more beautiful requires some type of enhancement!"
