Colored Stone

Trends

Seminar brought to you by the

GEMGUIDE

Richard Drucker, of GemWorld International
researcher, author, and colored gemstone expert says that there has never been such a large spread between the high and low end of gem stones as there is today. The high and the low areas are strong. Large rare gems are doing well thanks in part to demand from China. Low end gems make up the majority of gems sales today.

EMERALD    TRENDS

The Patone group named "Emerald Green" the color of the year! This is the first in a long time that a 'gem' color has been named. The trend in Emeralds is there is a steady demand for better quality. Columbia and Zambia are still the largest producers and they have been doing great at auction.

SAPPHIRE TRENDS

For the current time,  blue sapphires as well as other colors are strong. Neon sapphires are especially hot right now. However, with more mines and more advancement in mine technology the price of sapphires may decline. The large amount of treated sapphires on the market may also make the gem stone less desirable.

RUBY TRENDS

Development in Mozambique could lead to improved supply.

The Burma embargo is not being enforced.

LOWER priced rubies are selling. Beads, cabochons & crystals are selling to hobbyists and craft home jewelry businesses. One AGTA dealer said these quality rubies are selling 10 to 1 over fine gems.

PEARL TRENDS
perals
Pearls are strong. Every year there are new shapes and new colors. China produces up to 1500 TONS of pearls annually! Pearls have great names such as Edison pearls and Souffle. Sales of South Sea pearls have declined because there is not enough of a difference in appearance to justify the huge price difference between them and Chinese fresh water rounds.
