FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Normandale Families,

The days are getting shorter, but Normandale is packing a lot into them! During the month of September we:
  • Piloted goal-setting conferences for students. Click here to tell us how you liked the new format.
  • Held Curriculum Information Night on a really busy evening at ECC!
  • Implemented a new reading curriculum, "Making Meaning," in the English Language Arts classrooms in grades 3, 4 and 5.
  • Began teaching newly translated writing units in grades K, 1 and 2.
  • Had 3 fire drills! Every year we practice 5 fire drills.
  • Launched our new Student Leadership Team for 5th graders under the direction of Roxanne Stronczer (grade 4 teacher), Derrick Lidstone (Kids Club/Wise Guys Supervisor) and Josh Jansen (Elementary Teacher on Special Assignment). Stay tuned for more information about the projects these student leaders will be undertaking this school year.
The days will be even shorter this month and next, but they will be just as busy.
  • October 10: Normandale will practice the first of 4 lockdown drills this year. Teachers prepare students for these drills with kid-friendly language the first time we run it each school year.
  • October 18: at 7 PM Superintendent Dressen will address the Normandale community (More on this below). I look forward to seeing you at this meeting.
  • October 19: Normandale hosts immersion teachers and administrators from across the nation. These immersion educators are in town for a national conference on immersion over MEA break. They will visit Normandale classrooms, get a tour of our building from Normandale Student Leadership Team members and finish with Q&A with me.
  • November 8: Normandale's Student Leadership Team will lead an assembly to kick-off the Normandale's food drive running from November 14 to November 18.

  And, don't forget:

  • November 12: from 6-11 PM Normandale's annual adults-only gala and fundraiser, Réussir Ensemble, takes place at the Edina Country Club (More on this below). I look forward to seeing you at this event!

URGENT CALL FOR ART ADVENTURE VOLUNTEERS
Art Adventure Volunteers still needed!
Greatest need for grades 3-5
Deadline for sign-up: October 20th

Vincent van Gogh
(Dutch, 1853 - 1890)
Irises, 1889, Oil on canvas
29 1/4 × 37 1/8 in.
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

Please volunteer, so we may continue to offer this amazing program!  Consider teaching a 40 minute Art Class over your child's lunch hour.

Don't know anything about art? No problem. Free training is provided at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA). Learn all about art from different time periods, countries, and cultures.

Expand not only your child's horizons, but yours as well. It's a great way to volunteer without a huge time commitment:
  • Teaching: 40 minutes/month over lunch 2-3 times per school year, starting in November
  • Training: 2-3 hours (evening or morning) lots of training dates from which to choose in the month of October
We need enough parents to volunteer in order to share all the art pieces from the MIA with all of our students.

Volunteers needed - Election Day, November 8, 2016
A Polling Place Near You

This November, Edina students of all ages will be invited to accompany their parents to the polls to vote for the political candidates of their choice, thanks to an exciting voting initiative called "Kids Voting Edina."

Adult and student volunteers are needed on Election Day (Nov. 8) to assist with  setting up  Kids Voting Polls, counting votes, collecting ballots and helping guide kids through the election process. Most volunteers will be asked to work a 2 ½ hour shift on election night (3:45 - 6:15 PM or 6:00 - 8:30 PM) with one or two other volunteers.

No prior experience is necessary. One-hour training sessions will be provided October 26 at 10 AM, 1 PM and at 5 PM. Volunteers need only attend one session. Young people are encouraged to volunteer as well - those 8th grade and under should be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
