Parents! Help Foster Good Attendance and Punctuality

Research has shown that regular attendance and punctuality are two extremely important criteria when measuring a student's school success. In addition, they are two attributes that will positively or negatively affect an individual's success throughout their professional and personal lives. When a student is frequently absent or tardy it results in interruptions and missed instruction that could delay and detract from the student's progress.

The District recently revised and simplified its attendance policy to better align with state statute.  Some of the changes you will want to note are:

Vacations
Vacations will be counted as unexcused absences UNLESS parents fill out the linked Planned Absence form.

Tardies
Students arriving to school more than one hour late will be marked absent for a half-day.

What you can do
  • Establish routines to ensure punctuality. In many instances, morning procedures need only be altered by as little as 5-10 minutes to ensure on time arrival.  Students should arrive at school between 8:20-8:25 AM. The tardy bell rings every day at 8:30 AM and students are expected to be in their classrooms ready to begin the day at that time.
  • Set a schedule and routine for bedtime, morning wake-up and transportation to school so time is not missed due to poor organization.
  • Shoot for over 95% attendance every year! This represents less than 9 days out of school per year.
  • If your student is absent, call Normandale's attendance line at: 952-848-4102.  Do NOT call your student's teacher to report an absence.
What the school will do
  • Our Attendance Team will closely monitor absences so families can remedy potential attendance problems.
  • Families will be contacted if a student is frequently absent and/or tardy.
  • If an attendance problem is identified, our Attendance Team will work with families to correct the problem.
If you have questions about your student's attendance please contact me at 952-848-4199.

EDINA PCN PRESENTS
Chemical Health and Mental Health: What Parents Need to Know

Monday, October 3rd, 2016
7-9 PM, Edina High School Performing Art Center, FREE

The Edina Parent Communication Network
Edina PCN hosts its first forum of the 2016-2017 school year, featuring Dr. Joseph Lee of the Hazelden Foundation.

Dr. Lee seeks to educate parents on adolescent brain development, and the environmental/genetic variables that are involved in substance abuse and mental health issues.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ART ADVENTURE

What is ART ADVENTURE?
Art Adventure is an art appreciation program for grades 3 through 5 based on original paintings, sculpture, textiles and photographs from the collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This year's theme is Cultural Reflections in Arts.

The Art Adventure program is a great foundation for discovering and understanding art through creativity, critical thinking and global awareness. We don't tell the children what to think about the art, but rather engage them through discussion.  We ask questions like: "what do you see?" "why do you think they did that?" and "what do you think that means?"

WHO DO WE NEED?
You! We need parent volunteers to teach a 40-minute Art Class over the children's lunch hour.

"BUT I'M NOT AN ARTIST..."
Don't know anything about art? That's okay. Free training is provided at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. You will learn all about art from different time periods, countries and cultures. This is an opportunity to expand not only your child's horizons, but yours as well. It's also a great way to volunteer without a huge time commitment.

TIME COMMITMENT
Teaching40 minutes/month over lunch 2-3 times per school year. Volunteers will partner with another parent to teach each session.

Training2-3 hours total, with lots of training dates to choose from in September and October (morning and evening times)

WHEN
We need parent volunteers to continue offering this amazing program. Please email Lama Chebaclo at lbissar@yahoo.com with any questions. Thank you!

CLUB'S CHOICE FUNDRAISER
The Club's Choice Fundraiser is underway!

We hope to raise $30,000 to help fund our extraordinary French intern program.  Club's Choice is based out of Eau Claire, WI and has a great selection of frozen food (pizzas, cookie dough, gourmet breads and other frozen offerings) plus kitchen items, snacks, gift items and a large selection of Innisbrook wrapping paper.

Your child should have brought home an envelope containing two catalogs, an order form, information page and the prize poster. The prizes are cumulative and are based on the number of items sold.  Prizes will come with your products in November.

*Students who sell 25 items or more (40 items for multiple children in the same family) will earn a LIMO RIDE and Pizza Lunch!!*

We encourage you and your child to ask neighbors, relatives, co-workers and friends to help support our school by making a purchase.  You can also invite out of town friends and family to purchase items online.

Please collect payments upfront (payable to: Normandale PTO) and return it with your order form by October 7th. The items will arrive November 9th for distribution. If you encounter people who would prefer to donate directly to the school without purchasing anything, they can write a check payable to Normandale PTO.  The fundraiser runs through October 7, 2016

If you have questions please email: shannon.case@yahoo.com or katy_mollison@msn.com.
We appreciate your participation!
