May Tasting Event

A Tasting Event sponsored by the Normandale's Wellness Committee and Chartwells, our district's food service provider, will be held on Wednesday, May 18th during the lunch period.

Chartwells has a nutrition education program called Simply Good: Food Focus. This month's food focus is Berries. Your child will have the opportunity to try a banana kale berry smoothie and earn an "I tried it!" sticker.

This will be the only tasting event this school year at Normandale, but the Wellness Committee hopes to make this a monthly event starting in the 2016-17 school year.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event or future events, please contact Sarah Travis

Library Books Due Back

Calling All Library Books!!!

Seeing all the students each week in the Normandale Media Center has made this a great year. We have checked out over 66,800 books this year and had over 55,000 student log-ins from Normandale devices.
Now it is time to start closing the Media Center to prepare for the end of the year. Students were able to checkout books through Friday, May 13th . All books are due back no later than Friday, May 20th. Students will need to return all of their library books before the end of the school year.

Any materials not returned will stay on their account into the following school year and may prevent them from checking out additional books. Students graduating from Normandale need to settle their library accounts (returning or paying for books) prior to moving on to the middle school.

Questions? Need to see what items are out? Please contact the Media Staff at 952-848-4122 or Tracy Pearson, Media Specialist.

Thank you for a great year of reading, digital citizenship, and exploring in the Normandale Media Center!

Field Day Volunteers Needed

The annual Jeux d'été (Field Day) is returning to Normandale on
Friday, June 3

We need volunteers to make this day successful, so please consider signing up to help run the games or to be a classroom escort.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the games, please click here to sign up

If you would like to be a classroom escort, please click here to sign up

Field Day will be held rain or shine from 11:30am - 2:15pm. In case of inclement weather, the games will be held in the gymnasiums.

Check the Lost and Found!

Check out our new organized Lost and Found, making it easier than ever to retrieve those missing items!

Special thanks to parent Susan Sanda for her help with this project. Items not picked up by the end of the school year will be donated to charity.

Encouraging Your Child to Read

Motivating children to read is one of those agony-ecstasy tasks every parent and teacher faces sooner or later. There are myriad reasons children don't like to read, and these articles will explain why and what you can do about it. Dig in!

For Parents of Current 3rd and 4th Graders

To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months.

Did You Know?
  • All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004).
  • Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months. Low-income students also lose more than two months in reading achievement, despite the fact that their middle-class peers make slight gains (Cooper, 1996).
  • Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do (Duffett et al, 2004).
Many Americans have a wonderful image of summer as a carefree, happy time when "kids can be kids," and take for granted the prospect of enriching experiences such as summer camps, time with family, and trips to museums, parks, and libraries.

However enriching these activities may be, children also need specific activities to boost their reading comprehension and prevent the "summer slide" so when they return to school in August they feel confident in their abilities as a reader.

We have heard from many parents for the need of a "reading program" over the summer months to help them help their children in retaining the skills they learned over the school year. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a tailored program where parents received weekly updates with specific activities for their child to do?

If this is a question you have asked yourself and would like to receive weekly reading activities and suggestions throughout the summer months, and you are a parent of a current 3rd or 4th grader, please send an email to Jennifer Johnson before May 25th.  Laura Hanson and I will tailor activities based on your child's grade level/reading level (as taken from the most recent MAP test/lexile) to help them keep up with comprehension skills over the summer months through reading fiction, non-fiction, and current event selections. These updates will include other activities that you can do with your child while reading to them every day and will be sent to you in convenient weekly email updates throughout the summer.
