Field Day Volunteers Needed

The annual Jeux d'été (Field Day) is returning to Normandale on Friday, June 3The day is shaping up to be a lot of fun with field games, carnival games and face painting.

We need volunteers to make this day successful, so please consider signing up to help run the games or to be a classroom escort.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the games, please click here to sign up

If you would like to be a classroom escort, please click here to sign up

Other useful information:
  • Please pack a bag lunch and beverage for each student.
  • Socks and athletic shoes are required.
  • Remember the sunscreen!
Each class has been assigned a color to wear at Field Day to make it easier to escort each class:

K = Blue
1 = Black or White
2 = Red
3 = Yellow
4 = Green

Field Day will be held rain or shine from 11:30am - 2:15pm. In case of inclement weather, the games will be held in the gymnasiums.

From the Health Office

As the weather improves, please remember that students are expected to dress appropriately for the season and wear clothing that will allow them to be outside during recess.

For safety reasons, appropriate footwear is especially important. Open-toed and open-heeled shoes are more likely to cause falls, become lodged in playground equipment, and result in painful foot injuries. Let's keep our students warm and safe this spring!

Library Books Due Back

Calling All Library Books!!!

Seeing all the students each week in the Normandale Media Center has made this a great year. We have checked out over 66,800 books this year and had over 55,000 student log-ins from Normandale devices.
Now it is time to start closing the Media Center to prepare for the end of the year. Students will checkout through Friday, May 13th . All books are due no later than Friday, May 20th. Students will need to return all of their library books before the end of the school year.

Any materials not returned will stay on their account into the following school year and may prevent them from checking out additional books. Students graduating from Normandale need to settle their library accounts (returning or paying for books) prior to moving on to the middle school.

Questions? Need to see what items are out? Please contact the Media Staff at 952-848-4122 or Tracy Pearson, Media Specialist.

Thank you for a great year of reading, digital citizenship, and exploring in the Normandale Media Center!

French Story Time

We are looking forward to a great summer and another series of 'French Story Time' at the Edina Library!

French Story Time is a great opportunity for Normandale children. When you come to French Story Time this summer, your child will have the chance to hear a story read in French by some of their favorite teachers. They can reconnect with friends from school and become familiar with the French collections at the Edina Library, where new French titles arrive on a weekly basis!  And, best of all it's FREE thanks to all of the wonderful teachers from our community who volunteer for this fun event.

We divide the children into two groups according to age. One reader for the younger children (kids going into 1st - 2nd grade) and another reader for the older children (kids going into 3rd - 5th grade).

Dates are as follows: June 13, June 20, June 27, July 11 and July 18
Time: 5:00-5:30pm (Monday evenings)
Place: The Edina Library: 5280 Grandview Sq., Edina, 55436 (off of Vernon)

Maintaining Students' First Languages

Many parents who speak a native language other than English feel pressure to speak English with their children at home. Parents want their children to be academically successful, and they know that English is the medium of instruction.  However, research shows that bilingualism is of great benefit to the brain, and having a strong connection to a home culture and language is important for children's sociological and psychological development.  Please encourage parents to use their first languages at home with their children by reading, playing games, singing songs and engaging in cultural activities in their first languages with their children. Children who have strong first language skills develop strong thinking skills and are able to transfer their language and literacy skills to their second language. For more information, see the  WIDA Focus Bulletin - The Early Years.
