From the Principal

Two weeks ago the Normandale community came together to celebrate spring at 'La Kermesse,' or carnival. What a fun event! The highlight for me was receiving a "pie" in the face 20+ times! A big THANK YOU to all the carnival volunteers, especially Chris Deets and Feroza Mehta for coordinating these efforts.

Other fun community building events coming up at Normandale include:
  • May 12 from 5:00-7:00pm: Incoming Kindergarten Welcome with Normandale's specialist teachers
  • May 16 from 6:00- 6:30pm: Grade 5 Band Concert
  • May 17 from 7:00- 8:00pm: What to Expect in Middle School with Valley View's counselors and Edina's Technology Director, Steve Buettner. Even if you don't have a middle schooler next year, this is a great opportunity to find out more about technology in Edina and the Extended French program at Valley View.
  • May 23 from 7:00- 7:30pm: Grade 5 Orchestra Concert
  • June 3: Grade 5 Graduation and All School Field Day
Chris Holden, Principal

From the Health Office

As the weather improves, please remember that students are expected to dress appropriately for the season and wear clothing that will allow them to be outside during recess.

For safety reasons, appropriate footwear is especially important. Open-toed and open-heeled shoes are more likely to cause falls, become lodged in playground equipment, and result in painful foot injuries. Let's keep our students warm and safe this spring!

Field Day Volunteers Needed

The annual Jeux d'été (Field Day) is returning to Normandale on Friday, June 3The day is shaping up to be a lot of fun with field games, carnival games and face painting.

We need volunteers to make this day successful, so please consider signing up to help run the games or to be a classroom escort.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the games, please click here to sign up

If you would like to be a classroom escort, please click here to sign up

Other useful information:
  • Please pack a bag lunch and beverage for each student.
  • Socks and athletic shoes are required.
  • Remember the sunscreen!
Each class has been assigned a color to wear at Field Day to make it easier to escort each class:

K = Blue
1 = Black or White
2 = Red
3 = Yellow
4 = Green

Field Day will be held rain or shine from 11:30am - 2:15pm. In case of inclement weather, the games will be held in the gymnasiums.

- Maintaining Students' First Languages

Many parents who speak a native language other than English feel pressure to speak English with their children at home. Parents want their children to be academically successful, and they know that English is the medium of instruction.  However, research shows that bilingualism is of great benefit to the brain, and having a strong connection to a home culture and language is important for children's sociological and psychological development.  Please encourage parents to use their first languages at home with their children by reading, playing games, singing songs and engaging in cultural activities in their first languages with their children. Children who have strong first language skills develop strong thinking skills and are able to transfer their language and literacy skills to their second language. For more information, see the  WIDA Focus Bulletin - The Early Years.
