Spring Break Begins

From the Principal: Immersion Fair

For the past several years, MAIN Parents, (Minnesota Advocates for Immersion Network), has hosted an Immersion Festival.  This year's Immersion Festival is on Saturday, April 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Minnetonka High School Arts Center, located at 18301 Highway 7, Minnetonka, MN 55345.

The purpose of the event is to celebrate our immersion students' efforts to learn world languages, expose them to other languages and cultures, and to foster a sense of belonging with the larger community of Minnesota language immersion learners.

At this year's festival, Ev Emerson and some of her students will represent Normandale through song!  In addition to Normandale's performance, other metro immersion schools will be performing songs, skits and poetry.

Attend the MAIN Immersion Festival and learn about camps, cultural events and language related activities in the Twin Cities area.

Parent Input Forms

Each spring, teachers and support staff meet and confer to develop class lists for the coming year, striving to create classes where optimum learning for all students can take place. If you have specific information about your child that should be taken into consideration, please complete the optional  Parent Input Form. The due date for this information is MARCH 25th.

From the Health Office

Please, stop sharing! Influenza is on the rise in Minnesota, and we've already seen a few cases in Edina. Symptoms of an influenza-like-illness (ILI) include a fever over 100 degrees accompanied by a cough and/or sore throat.

We will be working with the staff and students at Normandale to decrease exposure to germs. Please keep sick children at home to prevent the spread of illness, and remember that good hand washing is your best defense! Thank you for your help!

Remember that children should not return to school until they've been fever-free for 24 hours.

Normandale Carnival -- Raffle Basket Donations

The Normandale carnival is coming!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16th from 4:30 -7:30 p.m.

Our kids LOVE the carnival.  It's the one thing our students look forward to every year.  There will be food, games, face painting -- and you can even throw a pie at Principal Holden!!!

Best of all, the profits from the carnival fund our award-winning intern program.

One of the keys to the carnival's success is the tradition of raffle baskets. All the kids' eyes light up when they walk into the gym and see tables full of raffle baskets.  This year, they'll be able to win a Hoverboard, an iPad mini, throwing out the first pitch at a Twins game, 100 $1 bills, and much more!

Please donate to our raffle basket fund.  Just $10 per Normandale student is what we need!

Skateboarding in PE

Skateboarding in Grade 4 starts next week! We will be riding boards during physical education class starting next week and going for three lessons.

There are often questions about this unit, so Ms. Hoecherl and Mr. Hannemann have created an informational page to help! If you have questions after looking over this page, please reach out to Julie Hoecherl or John Hannemann

Skateboarding Club

Students in grades 3-5 are invited to join Normandale's Skateboarding Club!

The skateboarding club meets from 5:45-6:45 pm on Thursdays starting March 17th and running for 6 sessions. Students advance from the skills learned in PE class, or start fresh if they're new to skateboarding.  The class is individualized, so each student can progress at his or her own pace.  All needed equipment is provided, although students are welcome to bring their own safety gear.

The class is taught by John Hannemann and two EHS students. For more info, click here

Edina Fitness Club

The Fitness Club helps students get ready for the school day by firing up their bodies and brains while working on overall fitness, strength, and flexibility... and having fun! Workouts and games are designed to be adjustable to any fitness level.

Students in grades 3-5 are welcome to participate 2, 3, or 5 days per week.  Fitness Club meets from 7:45-8:15 a.m.

Stay connected with budget plans for 2016-2017 and beyond

The second meeting of the Budget Advisory Task Force was held on Monday, Feb. 29.

The team reviewed additional budget data, including how district expenditures compare with other metro schools districts. BATF members assessed draft recommendations of approximately $600,000 based on priorities determined by the task force last week as well as prior year budget discussions. They then reviewed additional adjustment considerations for budget reduction, reallocation and/or revenue generation.

BATF teams were charged with prioritizing the considerations and providing additional insights, which administration will then process and combine with the draft adjustments to create a total recommendation package that totals between $750,000 to $1 million for 2016-17. Learn more about the BATF and review meeting materials online at edinaschools.org/BATF.

In addition to gathering feedback from staff and the Gifted Advisory Committee, the district is also seeking broader parent and community input.
