From the Principal

Dear Normandale Families,

We have a great system for supplying Normandale students with the school supplies they need to be successful. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a parent volunteer to help coordinate school supply distribution for 2016-17. I would hate to take a step backwards to the days of sending out school supply lists and sending families on a treasure hunt to Target. If you loved school supplies as a kid, you will love helping organize Normandale's school supplies for the 2016-17 school year. Please email me if you are interested or have questions.

On another note, my teenage kids like to make fun of their tech and pop-culture challenged father. Just to spite them, I decided to join the 21st century and begin tweeting about happenings at Normandale, immersion education and French language and culture. I am looking forward to sharing Normandale's stories in an easily digestible and visual format, Twitter. You can follow me @MonsieurHolden. My first Normandale tweet will go out this weekend!

LAST CALL: Vide-Grenier - Fundraiser for Haiti

Third Grade Students are planning and hosting the 5th Annual Vide-Grenier (Garage Sale -- Fundraiser) on Wednesday, February 24 for their service learning project. The fundraiser will  be open to students only. Families are donating items that will be sold and all proceeds will be used to help the community of Lougou, Haiti through the organization COFHED

If you would like to support this project, please consider allowing your child to purchase items during the day of our sale. All classes at Normandale will have the opportunity to come to the Vide-Grenier during the day to "shop" around (just as with the Scholastic Book Fair). Most items will be priced at $2 or less.

If you would like to donate items for the garage sale, here are the guidelines:
  • Donate something from your workplace, like old office supplies
  • No weapons or items of a violent nature (guns, swords, etc.)
  • No stuffed animals
  • Only E or G rated CDs, DVDs, and game disks
  • No broken toys or toys with missing parts
  • No items that require trying on (ice skates, soccer shoes, etc.)
  • If items have multiple parts, please label the items (tell us what they are) and put all the parts in a clear plastic bag so parts do not get misplaced
  • Books appropriate for ages K-5 in any language are acceptable
Please bring your donations to any 3rd grade teacher. We will accept donations until Tuesday, Feb. 23rd. In order to ensure a successful sale, each 3rd, 4th and 5th grader needs to bring in a minimum of 4 items to sell. At this point, we don't have enough. PLEASE DONATE!

MERCI!

From the District

District seeks students, parents, staff, community representatives for budget advisory task force

With expenses outpacing revenues and learning needs continuously advising, the district is looking to engage its stakeholders in its annual budget process. The purpose of the Budget Advisory Task Force (BATF) will be to analyze pertinent information and consider options for better aligning district finances with learning and Next Generation EPS strategic outcomes. The BATF will explore financial adjustments that include budget reductions, reallocations and revenue generators for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years.

Specifically, the BATF is charged with making adjustment recommendations totaling $500,000 to $1 million, which equates to less than one percent of the district's annual general operating budget. The recommendations of the BATF will inform administrative recommendations, for which 2016-17 adjustments will be presented to the School Board at its meeting on March 14. The BATF will meet three times in public meetings over the next month. The public is invited to attend and observe BATF meetings. Engagement of such attendees will be encouraged as appropriate.

National expert will lead community conversation on cultural responsiveness

Thursday, March 37-8:30pm

Edina Performing Arts Center at EHS

Edina is becoming a more diverse school district and community. How do we transform to include increasing cultural diversity? Come join in a conversation on March 3 with Dr. Sharroky Hollie, titled " Creating a Culturally Responsive Community."

We are each born and raised in a culture that forms our impressions of self, community and world. This presentation will explore how our own culture and our understanding of race, equity, and responsiveness can influence community awareness and support for change. Through the lens of cultural responsiveness, this community conversation will look at how Edina can support its schools in serving all students equitably and responsively, while also ensuring that the Edina community is welcoming to all residents.

Registration is free, but participants are encouraged to RSVP online  or by calling 952-848-3952.
