Kindergarten Sibling Preference - Last Chance!

Incoming Kindergarten Sibling Preference for 2016-17 School Year

Current Normandale families with a child who will be kindergarten age by September 2016 should have already received the mailing from the district in the form of a 5-fold cardstock brochure with a pink Program Preference Form as one of the panels. Please remember that to receive "sibling preference" for Normandale, you must notify the district office by 6:00pm on January 11, 2016 using one of these options:

  1. You can tear the pink page off and mail it in. The mailing address is pre-printed for you. You will receive an email confirmation that it has been received.
  2. You can drop it off at the Student Enrollment Office on the first floor of the Edina Community Center.
  3. You can fill it out online. The web address is listed on the pink page. You will receive a message that your form has been submitted.
Information turned in after the deadline will be dated and numbered in the order received and placed at the end of the waitlist if a lottery is necessary. If you should have any questions about the process, please contact the Normandale office at 952-848-4100.

From the Principal

The New Year ushers in lots of positive personal changes and resolutions: exercise more, lose weight, save more etc. Normandale also has plans for positive change in the New Year. They include: 1) a re-alignment and reduction of some standardized testing and 2) plans for re-modeled Next Generation instructional spaces.

ASSESSMENT
Beginning this year, the district will be requiring a Winter MAP for all students in Grades 3-5. In addition, the state has asked districts to carefully consider the amount of standardized assessments they require. Edina Public Schools values the annual growth data provided by the NWEA MAP assessment and will continue to capture this each winter. By strategically placing this test in the winter, teachers and staff can immediately utilize results for the remainder of the school year. These results not only inform instructional needs, but also student learning. We hope this change results in more flexibility for all stakeholders. In addition, we are reviewing the purpose and future use of the CoGAT instrument and will provide further details as they become available from our GT Study Committee.

All third, fourth, and fifth graders will be taking the MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) in math and reading this winter. The window opens on Tuesday, January 12 and runs through February 2. (Your child's teacher will let you know when these tests are scheduled.) These un-timed, computerized, district-required, adaptive tests are used to measure student progress over time; they are a growth tool and are aligned with MCA cut scores and ACT benchmarks.

Although there is no way to study for the MAP test, like any regular school day, academic performance will be higher with a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast and regular exercise. You will be able to access your child's MAP results via School View within several days of the close of the testing window.

NEXT GENERATION SPACES
This fall a group of teachers and parents met with Wold Architects to begin planning for remodeled instructional spaces at Normandale. Proposed changes include:
  • Utilizing vacated District Office space for instruction
  • Creating flexible learning spaces
  • Co-locating student services
  • Creating collaboration and work spaces for staff and community
  • Designing a learning commons and
  • Designating an outdoor learning space
Wold Architects will begin meeting with "user groups" in January and February to tweak these draft designs. Construction is slated to begin the summer of 2017!

Teachable Safety Skills
with Alison Feigh from the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center

Monday, January 11, 2016
Edina High School, Performing Arts Center
7-9pm FREE!

* How do I talk to my children about personal safety without scaring them?
* How do I talk to my teen about their online choices without alienating them?

Talks on personal and online safety do not have to be top-downheavy or scary. This workshop provides caregivers and parents with practical tools they can use in talking about online and personal safety concerns with youth of all ages in a positive and empowering way.

Alison Feigh serves as the Program Manager for the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center (JWRC), a program of Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center. Alison came to JWRC in 2001 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, VA. As a subject matter expert on the topic of child and teen safety, Alison has done extensive media interviews including CNN, Fox News, and local news stations. Her positive, accessible personal safety messages are featured in her children's books, "On Those Runaway Days" and "I Can Play It Safe." She is known for her high-energy speaking style and her ability to take on fearful topics while avoiding fear based approaches to education.

As a classmate of Jacob Wetterling, Alison learned early on how important it is to protect children and youth from exploitation.
