Principal's Message

Dear Normandale Families,

Two weeks ago, Canadian author and illustrator, Annie Groovie, visited Normandale to share her lovable cyclops "Léon." All students participated in author presentations to learn how Annie Groovie creates Léon and comes up with ideas for her stories. In addition,  students in 1st-3rd grades participated in writer's workshops to learn how to draw Léon and write their own stories.  These stories focused on helping students write complete sentences to describe their emotions and learn new sayings in French. If your child is in 1st-3rd grade, you've seen or will be seeing these books shortly! The work was fun and actively engaged our students in meeting their reading and writing goals.

One of Normandale's French interns, Hélène Lebon (Mlle. Smedstad, Grade 2), captured audio from this visit and shared it with her former colleagues at Radio Canada Internationale.  From this audio clip two stories about Annie Groovie and her visit to Normandale were produced, one in French and another in Spanish.  Check them out at the following links - French and Spanish.

Merci Annie Groovie! Normandale adore Léon!

Dazzling Dave and the Science of Spin

The Science of Spin® is coming to Normandale Elementary!

From Nov 30th-Dec 4th, "Dazzling Dave" Schulte, National Yo-Yo Master, will present a program called Science of Spin®. As part of this program, he will teach how to yo-yo in P.E. workshops.

Dave teaches science through the use of toys and sporting equipment. This helps children understand how physics play a part of their everyday life. Yo-Yoing is a part of his demonstration. It is a skill that develops hand-eye coordination, builds self-esteem, enhances motor skills, and teaches the benefits of practice. It is also a lot of fun!

Yo-yos will be provided for the P.E. classes, so buying a yo-yo is not mandatory. However, if your child does not have a good working yo-yo, the high quality type used in the classes will be available at school for five days following the program. The box below details what is available, no tax is added to the price listed. Cash payment preferred or contact Mr. Hannemann for other payment options.

We look forward to this program and are sure this will be a valuable, and enjoyable activity for our students.

Dazzling Dave stresses the importance of safe yo-yoing both in the initial program, and in the workshops.
