Parent/Teacher Conferences (No School)

Thanksgiving Break (No School)

 From the Principal

Dear Normandale Families,
Last week I attended a conference on bi-lingual education hosted by the French Embassy in Washington, DC. A primary goal of the Cultural Services Division of the French Embassy is the growth and support of French language instruction in the United States. To this end, French language researchers, educators, and administrators from across the country were invited to participate in this conference. Three primary challenges faced by all institutions teaching French were addressed at this conference:
  • Recruiting and training qualified teachers
  • Developing and sharing curriculum
  • Accrediting/recognizing quality French teaching programs
How big is this network of schools teaching French and what prominence does French have in the US and the world today?
  • In the US, there are 47 French high schools and 134 bi-lingual French schools, some like Normandale.
  • In the US there are 1.3 million French speakers.
  • French is the 3rd language of commerce in the US after English and Chinese.
  • The number of French speakers in the world is predicted to grow from 300 million today to over 700 million in 2050.
  • Language immersion programs are exploding across the country in places like Utah, New York, North Carolina and California.
Because the number of French immersion schools in Minnesota is small (3), it was exciting to network with schools and organizations across the US that share Normandale's mission. I look forward to continued conversations and problem-solving with these groups.

French Books Available

Your child has an exciting opportunity to order eight books directly from France for less than $70.00 per year! These books will arrive in your child's classroom directly from the publisher, L'école des Loisirs.

The books are chosen from among the best books of the L'école des Loisirs series (and occasionally books by other quality publishers) that we believe foster a love of reading in children and that introduce them to different writing and illustration styles. These are not magazines -- they are books. They include albums, novels, comic books, and non-fiction works around which your children can build their very own personal library. Each book is designed to guide a child onto the rich path of reading.

Your child has previewed some of these books during their time in the Media Center and they were excited to read more! If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete the order form that was sent home in your student's backpack. Forms should be returned to your child's classroom teacher on or before November 13th. The books will arrive one per month in your child's classroom.

Please join us, one and all!

Art Adventure

Registration is now open for Art Adventure!

Students in grades 3 through 5 are invited to participate in Art Adventure. This free program will be held six times during the year, starting in November. There will be one program per month, taking place over the lunch hour (actually 45 minutes).

Participants will learn about a work of art at each session while enjoying a brown bag lunch brought from home. A related art project will also be offered. Programs are led by parent volunteers.

About Art Adventure

Art Adventure is an art appreciation program for students in grades 3-5 based on original paintings, sculpture, textiles, and photographs from the collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This year's theme is Amazing Animals in Art

The Art Adventure program is a great foundation for discovering and understanding art through creativity, critical thinking and global awareness. We don't tell the children about the the art, but rather ask them questions like "What do you see?" "Why do you think they did that?" "What do you think that means?" to create a discussion and help them develop their own answers.

Click here to view a short video explaining the Art Adventure program.

How do I register my student?

To participate, please sign up your student using our googledocPlease note, we need to limit Art Adventure to 20 students per grade.

Please contact Kathy Tran with any questions.
