Innisbrook Fundraiser - In Full Swing
|
Thank you for your participation in our gift wrap and chocolate fundraiser!
Congratulations to the students who have already earned the Minion key chains. There is one week left to sell products. Remember, the money raised allows us to fund our wonderful intern program.
Here are a few things to keep in mind in the last week of the fundraiser:
- Please return both order forms and full payment to the Normandale office by Monday, October 5. The order form will be returned with your products for distribution in November.
- If multiple children in your household are combining their sales to achieve a higher level prize, please submit all orders under one child's name.
- Minion prizes from Levels A - D will be distributed weekly throughout the sale. Please fill out and return the coupons included in the sale packet to the Normandale office in order to receive them.
- Share the link with out-of-town family and friends so they can order on-line. The seller's name should be entered during checkout.

The sale will not be extended this year due to new order system.
Orders will arrive in mid-November for distribution.

Author Visit - Annie Groovie
|
Later this fall, the students of Normandale will meet author Annie Groovie from Canada. Annie is the French writer/illustrator of Léon, a one-eyed cyclops, and his friends, La Chat and Lola.
Léon has adventures with everyone he meets. Children in Canada know the lovable Léon from books and TV. All students will meet with Annie; grades 1-3 will have the opportunity to learn how to create a Léon booklet during a 4-day exclusive residency with Annie.
Mark your calendars for October 26 - 30th. It will be an exciting week!
An order form is available to purchase items by Annie Groovie. You may also choose to purchase her books. Please note these items are available for your convenience and there is NO profit or obligation to purchase. If you are interested, please complete the form and return with payment (checks made payable to Annie Trudelle) to the Media Center by September 30th so that items arrive from Canada in time for Annie's visit.

Art Adventures Volunteers

Art Adventure Volunteers Needed for Grade 3-5!
LAST CALL! We still need more volunteers to make this program happen.
Don't let this program disappear!
WHAT IS IT?:
Art Adventure is a Parent-run program that teaches kids about Art from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) collection. The students will gain not just an appreciation for the art, but also learn about culture, history, technique, and the artist perspective.
This class also lays an excellent foundation for critical analysis. Instead of telling the kids about the piece of art, we ask questions, such as, "What do you see?" Why do you think that?" and "Why do you think the artist did that?" so they can develop their own conclusions. After our discussion, the kids get to do some kind of art-related activity to bring it back to their level.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
You! Parent volunteers will teach a 40-minute Art Class over your child's lunch hour.
"BUT I'M NOT AN ARTIST..."
Don't know anything about art? That's OK. You will be partnered with another parent volunteer. Free training is provided at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. You will learn all about art from different time periods, countries, and cultures. This is an opportunity to expand not only your child's horizons, but yours as well. It's also a great way to volunteer without a huge time commitment.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Teaching: 40 minutes/month over lunch 2-3 times per school year.
Training: 2-3 hours total, with lots of training dates to choose from in October (morning and evening times)
WHEN: Sign Up Now!
Art Adventure starts in November, but we need volunteers before we can let the children sign up for the program.

5th Grade Trip to France
|
Bonjour 5th grade families! We hope the start of the school year has been going well!
We are excited to announce that this coming summer we will be taking fifth grade students to France through Intercultural Student Experiences (ISE). This program offers a wonderful travel abroad experience and connects students with French families.
Students will visit Paris and Tours, experiencing touristic attractions as well as visiting French schools and staying with French families. Mlle Schmidt, Mlle Stronczer, Mlle Smedstad and Mme Meyer will be possible chaperones for this trip.
Please join us Wednesday, September 30 at 6:30pm in room 226 (Mlle Stronczer's room) to learn more about how your child can be a part of this exciting opportunity.
Merci!
The Back-to-Back Team
Mlle Schmidt, Mlle Stronczer, Mlle Smedstad and Mme Meyer

Coat Drive Reminder |
Reminder: Bring your gently used coat to school from September 14-October 9 and Pilgrim Cleaners will clean them and distribute them to local charities. We will have a drop-off box near the office.
Not only is this a great way to unload your clutter, it's a wonderful way to get your kids thinking about giving to those in need.

Breakfast Time |
Improve nutrition and achieve more in school with breakfast! Improve nutrition and achieve more this school year by getting in the habit of starting your day with school breakfast. School breakfast is available at all schools. Whether students start their day with breakfast at school or at home, breakfast has an important place in student learning and health. Make breakfast a part of your students day! Check out the benefits of eating school breakfast for both school and overall health:
Academic Benefits
- Breakfast helps children pay attention and perform problem-solving tasks, and improves memory
- Eating breakfast can help improve math, reading and standardized test scores
- Children who eat school breakfast are less likely to be absent or tardy than those who do not eat breakfast at school
- Behavioral and emotional problems are less common among children who consistently have access to regular meals
Health and Nutrition Benefits
- By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein
- Research shows that children do not consume enough fruits, whole grains or milk products and breakfast at school is a great way to get those in
- Students who eat breakfast have decreased reports of illness such as stomachaches and headaches
All students are invited to participate in school breakfast before school starts each morning to fuel up! School breakfast includes a choice of a whole grain entree, meat alternative such as yogurt or string cheese, fruit or 100% juice, and a milk choice.
