Rally Month

Normandale Elementary loves our interns!

February is rally MONTH! We will need 54 host families to bring over 24 interns for the next school year. Each Friday in February, we will be doing something fun at school to remind everyone how important our intern program is!

Visit the Edina Interns web site to learn more about being a host family and/or to sign up. If you already know you want to host an intern, you can sign up now. Watch for more information as we get closer to Rally Month.

Scholastic Book Fair - Volunteers Needed

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon! Save the dates of Wednesday, January 28th (8am-6pm) and Thursday, January 29th (8am-8pm). Look for a flyer in your child's backpack in the next few weeks.

We need volunteers to make this event run smoothly.  Please sign up for a time slot here.  Thanks!

Vide-Grenier - Fundraiser for Haiti

Third grade students are planning and hosting the 4th annual VIDE-GRENIER (Garage Sale - Fundraiser) on Friday, February 13th for their service learning project. This year, we would like to invite 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade families to donate items that will be sold. All proceeds will be used to help the community of Lougou, Haiti, through the organization COFHED (www.cofhed.org). If you would like to donate items for the Garage Sale, here are the guidelines:

  • It can be something from your workplace such as old office supplies.
  • No weapons or items of a violent nature (i.e., guns, swords, etc.)
  • No stuffed animals
  • Only E or G rated CDs, DVDs and game disks
  • No broken toys or toys with missing parts
  • No items that require trying on (ice skates, soccer shoes, etc.)
  • If items have multiple parts, please label the items (tell us what they are) and put them all in a clear plastic bag so parts do not get misplaced
  • Books appropriate for ages K-5 in any language are acceptable.
Please bring your donations to any third grade teacher the week of February 9th. MERCI!

 2015 Imagination Fair

It's not too early to start thinking about your projects for the annual Imagination Fair! Project registration starts on February 20th, and the fair will be held on Tuesday, March 3. Watch for more details in upcoming newsletters.

For project ideas and guidelines, please check the Normandale PTO website, or contact Cheche Lacsamana with questions.

Digital Citizenship Month

During the month of January, Normandale students will hear discussions, watch videos, and participate in learning about Digital Citizenship and how to be responsible and safe online. Each week, different topics will be explored with age-appropriate activities:

  • Jan. 12-16: Digital Safety - safety of devices and online internet safety
  • Jan. 19-23: Giving Credit - copyright, plagiarism and citing sources
  • Jan. 26-30: Information Literacy - safe search, website credibility, information privacy
  • Feb. 2-6: Digital Footprint - online reputation, social networking, cyber-bullying

These are the different subjects we have discussed this week in the Media Center with Mme Pearson (Media Specialist):

  • Kindergartners answered questions as to "Just what is the Internet?" "How does it work?" "What can you do on the Internet?"
  • First graders learned about Going On-line safely and what should you do if you encounter a nasty pop-up.
  • Ask your 2nd graders, "What is a strong password- what goes into a password? Who do you share it with?"
  • 3rd graders will talk about Internet Safety.
  • 4th grade: Keywords- how to find the right sites along with a game to help them with Keyword Searches
  • 5th grade will continue their discussions on Twalkers and work on their Digital Passport Badges.

These discussions will continue throughout the school year and throughout your student's years in the Edina Public Schools to aid students to make the best use of our digital world and the different scenarios they might encounter. Look for more updates in our fast pace ever changing digital world!
