From the Principal

Dear Normandale Families,

I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season!  The New Year is just around the corner and there are some new things for Normandale in 2015:

  • Coach Jonny with Pros of the Rope has begun doing organized games in the gym during recess for students in grades 4, 2, 1 and K. (PE schedules and gym availability do not allow us to offer this option to grades 3 and 5.) Every day Coach Jonny takes several classes down to the gym to burn off some energy in a positive way. This is a great option as winter's cold settles in and our outdoor recess options diminish.
  • Molly Swiderski, grade 4 teacher, will be going out on maternity leave at the end of January. Sara Janousek, a grade 4 Normandale teacher currently on leave, will be filling in for Molly during her maternity leave. We are fortunate to have an experienced French speaking teacher like Sara join the grade 4 team for second semester.
  • Winter Measure of Academic Progress (MAP tests) will be administered to most students who scored below the 65 percentile on the fall MAP reading and/or math tests. The winter MAP's will be administered beginning the week after we return from break. This winter assessment will help our teachers gauge the progress of these students and plan for their instruction during semester two.
Enjoy the remainder of 2014 and I look forward to working with you and your student(s) in 2015!

Kindergarten Sibling Preference

Incoming Kindergarten Sibling Preference for 2015/16 School Year

For current Normandale families with a child who will be kindergarten age by September 2015, please remember that to receive "sibling preference" for Normandale, you must notify the district office by 6:00pm on January 12, 2015.

You should have already received your mailing from the district. Instead of an envelope this year, it is a 5-fold cardstock brochure with the pink Program Preference Form as one of the panels. There are different options this year for submitting your information:

1) You can tear the pink page off and mail it in. The mailing address is pre-printed for you. You will receive an email confirmation that it has been received.

2) You can drop it off at the Student Enrollment Office on the first floor of the Edina Community Center.

3) You can fill it out online. The web address is listed on the pink page. You will receive a message that your form has been submitted.

Information turned in after the deadline will be dated and numbered in the order received, and placed at the end of the waitlist if a lottery is necessary. If you should have any questions about the process, please contact the Normandale office at 952-848-4100.

French Books - Order Deadline Extended

Dear Normandale Families,

Your child has an exciting opportunity to order eight books directly from France for $67-$88 per year, depending on the level of reading! These books will arrive in your child's classroom directly from the publisher L'école des Loisirs. They are chosen from among the best books of the L'école des Loisirs series (and occasionally books by other quality publishers) that we believe foster a love of reading in children and that introduce them to different writing and illustration styles. These are not magazines - they are books. They include albums, novels, comic books, and non-fiction works around which your children can build their very own personal library. Each book is designed to guide a child onto the rich path of reading.

Your child has previewed some of these books during their time in the Media Center and they were excited to read more! If you are interested in this opportunity for your child, please complete the order form (order forms were sent home with students last week) and return to the Media Center on or before December 19 -- extended to January 9th. We will send in the first group of orders at the end of the day on December 19th. All others will be sent in January 9th. Please do NOT delay! The books for November - January will arrive in one shipment in late January, and the other books will arrive one per month in your child's classroom.

Please join us, one and all!
