Parent/Teacher Conferences

From the Principal

I can tell winter is coming based on the quantity of coats and jackets in our lost and found.  See the photo above -- too pink and too small for me!  When you are in the building for conferences, please stop by our lost and found to claim wayward items!  Items not claimed prior to winter break will be donated to a shelter.  Also, below is a reminder about our outerwear expectations for students as the weather turns colder:

  • If it is below 40 degrees, students need to wear a jacket.  (If they are hot, they can unzip their coat.)
  • Snow pants and boots are required when there is snow on the ground.  If students do not have snow pants or boots they stay on the blacktop.
  • Boots worn outside cannot be the same boots worn inside.  For example, if girls wear Uggs in school, they need snow boots for outside. If boys wear shoes/boots in school, they must have separate shoes/boots for outside.
  • Hats, mittens, etc., are necessary when it's below freezing (32 degrees).
  • Also, a reminder to please label all clothing with your child's name!  Thank you!

District Communications

Medical, Health and Accident Insurance

As noted in the Family Handbook sent to all families in August, the district does not purchase medical, health or accident insurance for your child. If your child has an accident, becomes ill, or is injured while at school or participating in district-sponsored activities, families will need to access their own insurance plans to cover any associated costs (e.g. medical care, emergency transportation). The district cannot pay these associated costs. Questions about insurance should be directed to Margo Bauck, Director of Business Services via email or 952-848-4916.

Important Information about School Meal Accounts
Edina Public Schools understands that good nutrition is essential for student learning and wants to ensure that all students have access to healthy meals during the school day. Families can access their student's online meal account via PayPAMS.com. Note that students with meal accounts in negative balance may either pay with cash at the time of purchase or they will be provided a bag lunch.

A reminder to families who qualify for free and reduced lunch price benefits that benefits must be applied for on an annual basis. If you have not completed a meal account benefit application for the 2014-15 school year, please complete and return the application form.

If you have additional questions about educational benefits or the school lunch program, please contact Dan Hutchinson, EPS Food Services Supervisor (952-848-3813).

From the Normandale Health Office

In order to stop the spread of strep in our school, it is recommended that students who are suspected of having strep throat stay at home until the strep culture results are determined, rather than relying on a rapid strep test.

If antibiotics are prescribed, the student may return to school after 24 hours of taking antibiotics and if they do not have a fever.

As we head into winter, the following are some good tips to help prevent the spread of strep and other cold viruses:
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Never share drink containers, cups or silverware or toothbrushes
  • Wash your hands
  • Wash all dishes with hot soapy water
  • Clean and disinfect any objects that come in contact with the nose or mouth
If you have any questions about the information contained in this message, please contact the Normandale Health Office at 848-4140 or speak with your primary care provider.

Stack Up Against Hunger

Sport Stacking event to get food to those who need it .......and set a Guinness Record too!

November 14, 7:30-8:15am in the ECC small gym
(adults and older siblings welcome for free!)
Grades K-5

The cost is $3, or free with donation of 3 cans of food. Food donations go to STEP through the Emergency Food Shelf Network.
  • Bring your cups for stacking (or use ours)
  • Try the Stack Attack obstacle course
  • Purchase cups, mats, and timers on site
  • 45 minutes of stacking!
The Stack Up is unstructured time with many options for students (like a smaller version of a school carnival). Students in kindergarten may need parent help, as this event can be overwhelming without it. Normandale students will be brought upstairs after the event. Please email John Hannemann with questions.

Volunteers Needed!! Sign up here.

Normandale Family Forum on Friendship

Hosted by Sandi Stein, MSW, LGSW
Thursday, November 13, 6:30 - 7:45 pm,
Normandale Auditorium

Going to school presents a wonderful opportunity for children to interact with a wide range of peers throughout the day. Many students will form life-long friendships with other students at Normandale.

Children vary in their ability to start and maintain friendships. Some seem to have a gift for being engaging, confident, flexible, and stable in their ability to cope with social situations. Other children may struggle to build and maintain friendships. These students may benefit from additional support and/or the need to learn more functional strategies.

This dialogue, entitled "Normandale Forum on Friendship" will be held Thursday, November 13 from 6:30-7:45 pm in the Normandale Auditorium. It follows our school-wide effort on Bullying Prevention held throughout October. Parents and their school-aged children are invited to come together; however parents may attend alone. The format will include lecture, discussion, videos, and printed literature to take home. Some of the topics discussed will be:
  • Structuring a play date to increase the likelihood of success
  • Increasing flexibility and adaptability
  • Developing coping skills when disappointments happen
  • Managing the end of a relationship (for both children involved)
  • Bullying: what it is and isn't and strategies for those being bullied and those who are bystanders
We held this event last year and are happy to present it again, with some new information.
Please RSVP to: Sandi Stein 952 848-4108

Teacher Bio: Meet Mlle Roxanne Stronczer

My name is Roxanne Stronczer and I am from Minneapolis.

I am half French and I grew up in a household that only spoke French. I hold an undergraduate degree from Hamline University in Education and Psychology. My license is for K-6 education. Previously, I taught second grade at another French immersion school in St. Paul.

Some of my passions include playing jazz piano, playing tennis, reading, running and traveling. This summer I was in South Korea and Japan visiting schools and friends.

I have also taught English in Mexico and Thailand. I also have a cat named Cleo who knows how to fetch. :)

I'm so excited to be teaching at Normandale and look forward to meeting you this coming year.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry... A Night to Remember!

Help us reach our goal of 300 attendees!

Ticket prices have been reduced compared to last year. However, the price will go up after midnight on Saturday, November 8th. So, don't delay and buy your tickets today!

There is also an advantage to buying tickets before the night of the event. Our auction will go "live" on Friday, November 14, which means we will send a link with access to all the items at the event.  If you purchase your tickets by Wednesday, November 12, (and provide us with a cell phone number) you will get a sneak peek at all the great Silent Auction items and the Community Connections Events (and be able to start the bidding or sign up early!). Imagine how great it would be to secure a spot in all your favorite Community Connection parties and not have to worry about it at Pinstripes. Instead, you can spend your time enjoying the company of other French Immersion parents and partaking in the great food and drink!

Can't Make it to Pinstripes?

Though we'd much rather have you there to join in the fun, if you can't attend in person here are some ways you can still make a difference:

1.  Donate a bottle for the Game of Throws

This is a fun new game this year! Roll the dice and whichever bottle is on the numbered board that corresponds with your number, you win. Guaranteed winner every time! Go home with your favorite beverage! The more bottles we collect, the more chances to win!

Drop off at: 5336 Kellogg Ave or  Donate now online and we'll do the shopping for you!

2.  Community Connections

Those who cannot attend the event will still have an opportunity to sign up for Community Connections via an online "auction." Spots that remain after the fundraiser will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. More information on this will be available after the event.

3.  Maybe you just can't host a Community Connection or don't have any items to donate to the Silent Auction. That's OK! You can still help. Donate now online! And we will use your generous donations to buy items for the Mystery Boxes, Game of Throws or Silent Auction.

We hope to see you there!

Please contact Karen Epple or Annie Heitzmann  with any questions.
