French Connections (Adult) Fundraiser at Pinstripes

From the Principal

Wednesday's late start gave Normandale teachers a head start on some critical language arts work for their classrooms. Recently the District Language Arts Design Team reviewed the Minnesota language arts standards and identified "priority" standards for each grade level. On paper, our teachers are familiar with these priority standards, but this late start gave them time to plan for instruction around these standards. This work is doubly important at Normandale since Minnesota's English language arts standards are the basis for both our English and French language arts instruction. This work will continue at the December 10th late start.

Teacher Bio: Meet Mme Nancy Pearson

I have been teaching music for sixteen years with a variety of age groups, but I love working with elementary students the best. For the last seven years I have been the Music Director for Waconia High School's fall musical and we open "Legally Blonde" on Thursday, October 30, so I have been very busy this fall. In addition to my teaching and musical directing, I direct a children's choir and a youth choir at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hopkins, MN.

My husband Dan and I have been married for 19 years. We live in Excelsior, MN with our two beautiful daughters, Lily (16) and Briette (13), and our cat, Billie Holiday (16). As a family we love to attend concerts, go to movies, camp, hike and go downhill skiing. We usually spend four or five days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area every August and camp at State Parks around Minnesota with friends and family throughout the summer months.

I am very excited to be working with the students and staff at Normandale French Immersion, it is a wonderful school and a great place to teach.

Innisbrook Order Pickup

Innisbrook orders will be available for distribution earlier this year than in the past. Please come pick up your items in the school auditorium on Thursday, November 13th from 2:00-4:00pm or on Friday, November 14th from 7:30-8:30am and again from noon-6:30pm.

Also, we are looking for three volunteers to help us unload the orders from the delivery truck on Thursday, November 13th from about 12:30-1:30pm. Some light lifting is involved. Please contact Jennifer Scott (952-239-9028) if you are interested in helping.

Art Adventure

Registration is now open for Art Adventure!

Students in grades 3-5 are invited to participate in Art Adventure. This free program will be held seven times during the year, starting in November. There will be one program per month, taking place over the lunch/recess time for 45 minutes. Participants will learn about a work of art at each session while enjoying a brown bag lunch brought from home. A related art project will also be offered. Programs are led by parent volunteers.

Art Adventure is an art appreciation program for students in grades 3-5 based on original paintings, sculpture, textiles, and photographs from the collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This year's theme is How People Lived.

Register your student here. Sign up soon! There is a limit of 20 children per grade. Please email Kathy Tran with any questions.

Visits from Author Nancy Carlson

Normandale is very excited to welcome local author/illustrator Nancy Carlson to meet with many of our grade levels!
  • Nancy will work with 4th grade students to create characters and a story in English over a 4 week residency. The students will create a "dummy book" to share.
  • Kindergarten through 3rd grade students will meet with Nancy as she teaches students about her books and how she comes up with her fun characters and colorful drawings:
November 11th - Kindergarten and 2nd grade

November 13th - 1st and 3rd grade

Students will have the opportunity to purchase books that Nancy will sign. There is no obligation to purchase books nor is any profit involved - this is simply an opportunity to allow students and their families to have a book signed by the author. You may find the order form and list of books here. Please return the form to the Media Center no later than November 7th to ensure timely delivery.

Normandale students are in for a very fun and memorable November!

Edina Public Schools' Ebola Response

While there have been a handful of confirmed cases of Ebola cases in the United States, there has as yet been no confirmation in Minnesota or nearby states. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control are closely monitoring all cases of suspected Ebola around the country in an effort to contain the spread of this dangerous virus. Edina Public Schools continues work cooperatively with the Minnesota Department of Health and the Hennepin County Public Health Department in monitoring the spread of the virus and implementing appropriate precautions. Some important reminders:

  • The risk of Ebola being spread in Minnesota continues to be extremely low.
  • Ebola is transmitted when a person has had direct contact with the blood or body fluids (e.g., saliva, urine, vomit, feces) of an Ebola-infected person or with objects contaminated with that person's blood or body fluids.
  • People returning from areas impacted by Ebola (e.g., West Africa), but who do not have symptoms such as fever or nausea, are not infectious.
  • The greatest risk for infections in our community continues to be common bacteria and viruses such as strep, enterobacteria (GI), and staph. As always, hand washing, covering your cough, and staying home when ill are your best defense against illness.
  • Additional information/resources on Ebola and other communicable conditions can be found on the EPS web site
