Teacher Bio: Meet Mlle Schmidt

My name is Jessica Schmidt, and I am one of the new kindergarten teachers. I am not new to the school, however; I am a former Normandale student!

In middle school, I attended a camp outside of Montréal, Québec, with several of my Extended French classmates. Hooked on French Canada, I worked there for several years as a camp counselor and attended McGill University in Montréal as a physiology major. Changing my major to Elementary Education, I came back to the Twin Cities to finish my degree at St. Thomas. Last year, I student taught in fifth grade at Countryside Elementary. I have worked at Countryside/Highlands KIDS Club, as a kindergarten para at Countryside, and as a substitute at Normandale. I'm thrilled to be back in the Normandale halls, and even more thrilled to be working with some of my former teachers-including Principal Holden, who was both my first and fourth grade teacher.

In my spare time, I love to be outside, whether it is hiking, camping or playing kickball. Once inside, though, I like reading, doing art projects, building with MagnaTiles, and hearing science or math jokes.

Pinstripes Adult Fundraiser

Tickets are on sale NOW for the Adult Fundraiser at Pinstripes!

Mark your calendars for the Pinstripes Event -- some have said it's their favorite night of the year! On November 15th, we hope to pack Pinstripes for a night of fun, festivities and fundraising. Brush up on your bocce and bowling skills, as well as your dance moves, because we will have it all! In addition, there will be the opportunity to sign up for Community Connections (designed to bring together members of our immersion community), bid on fantastic Silent Auction items, buy a Mystery Box for a secret surprise and try your skills at the Game of Throws.

What do we need from you?

Please contact Karen Epple or Annie Heitzmann with any questions or to discuss how you can help.

Art Adventure Volunteers Needed for Grades 3-5!

URGENT! Time is running out and we need parent volunteers to teach a 40 minute Art Class over their kid's lunch hour.

Don't know anything about art? No problem. Free training is provided at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Learn all about art from different time periods, countries, and cultures.

Expand not only your child's horizons but yours as well. It's a great way to volunteer without a huge time commitment.

Time commitment:
  • Teaching: 40 minutes/month over lunch 3- 4 times per school year.
  • Training: 2-3 hours (evening or morning) with lots of training dates to choose from.
***If we don't get volunteers, we won't be able to continue this amazing program!***

Please email Kathy Tran if interested.

Intern Program Seeking Help

Did you know that our intern program is 100% parent-funded? The 5-parent Intern Committee is seeking your help to ensure the future success of the intern program at our school.

We are seeking:

1) A person to organize Rally Week. This is a fun one-week event to drive awareness of our Intern Program. It would be an estimated 12-hour total commitment between now and January.

2) Parents with children K-3 to shadow existing committee members and grow into leadership roles. This would be an estimated 4-40 hour commitment over the course of the school year.

To get involved, please contact Delphine Aubourg, 612-702-6032 or visit the Edina Intern Website to learn more about these volunteer opportunities.

When the Temps Fall, We Need to Rise

Do you have an extra pair of snow boots or a warm jacket? If so, please add any items you are willing to donate to our interns on our Intern Lending List.

And remember, as the temps fall, more interns are in need of help getting around town using the Neighborhood Network. If you're already signed up, please be willing to give a ride to one of our amazing interns. If you are not signed up, please visit the Edina Intern Website to learn more and get involved.

Edina PCN Presents: Until It Hurts: America's Obsession with Youth Sports and How It Harms

Our Children

Over the last seventy-five years, adults have staged a hostile takeover of kids' sports. In 2003 alone, more than 3.5 million children under age fifteen required medical treatment for sports injuries, nearly half of which were the result of simple overuse. The quest to turn children into tomorrow's superstar athletes has often led adults to push them beyond physical and emotional limits.

Longtime sports journalist and author, Mark Hyman's recent writing examines the problematic state of youth sports and opens a much-needed discussion among parents, coaches, athletic trainers, recreation professionals and others. Leave with effective tools to help your child/adolescent learn these important skills.

Where: South View Auditorium

When: Monday, October 14th, 2014 7:00 - 9:00 pm

People across the United States will be working to improve their communities, help their neighbors, and help build healthy kids through a healthy community. We hope you'll join us.

Please go to www.edinadayofservice.org and let us know what you've got planned and what we might do to help.

Connecting With Kids

Connecting with Kids is a program of the Edina Community Foundation which supports our mission of connecting community resources for all children so they grow up to be responsible, healthy and caring adults.

Jr FIRST LEGO League Expo

New to Edina and to the Twin Cities Metro area this year is a Jr FIRST LEGO League (JrFLL) Expo, which will be held December 13, 2014 at the Edina Performing Arts Center Atrium, Edina High School. JrFLL is designed for children ages six to nine, and it features real-world concepts to be explored through research, teamwork, LEGO construction, and imagination.

Each year, JrFLL presents a different "Think Tank Challenge" that relates to an important real-world issue. Teams of two to six children are coached by parents, with help from our Edina High School students, to examine the topic in-depth, build a LEGO brick model to represent their solution, and present the information they have learned to judges using their LEGO model and a "Show Me" poster. Consider it similar to a science fair, but they get to build with LEGOs!

Information about JrFLL and details on how to register teams is available on the FIRST website. Specifics on the 2014 Think Tank Challenge, "Redefining Learning," can be found on the JrFLL website.

Kris Pastor is the local contact for JrFLL. Laurie Shimizu is a local contact for FIRST.
