Principal's Weekly

Dear Normandale Families,

I love spending my days with your children.  Since you have given me the privilege of time with them, I thought I would share my family with you.

Left to Right

David Lukaska (34), lives in Minneapolis and works developing custom software for companies.

Sarah Eastright (36) is a terrific mom, wife and school volunteer extraordinaire.

Josh Eastright is an executive at Blloomberg, LLC with management responsibilities in London & Washington, D.C.

William (6) and Charlotte (4) attend the British School in D.C. and delight all of us but especially me.

Happy Holidays from my family to yours,

Family Forum on Friendship

Family Forum on Friendship

Hosted by Sandi Stein MSW, LGSW,

Thursday January 16, 2014, 6:30- 7:45 pm, Normandale Auditorium

Going to school presents a wonderful opportunity for children to interact with a wide range of peers throughout the day. Many students will form life-long friendships with other students at Normandale. My adult son has maintained close relationships with others whom he met at elementary school. In fact, school is all about working with others, learning to get along, and building relationships.

Children vary in their ability to start and maintain friendships. Some seem to have a gift for being engaging, confident, flexible, and stable in their ability to cope with social situations. For other children it may be an area of struggle and may benefit from additional support or the need to learn more functional strategies.

This dialogue, which I have entitled "Normandale Forum on Friendship" will be held Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 6:30-7:45 pm in the Normandale Auditorium. Parents and their school-aged children are invited to come together; however parents may attend alone. The format will include lecture, discussion, videos, and printed literature to take home. If you would like to have something discussed please let me know. I hope this will be an opportunity for us to come together, exchange ideas, and become energized to try some new strategies. I always try to increase my repertoire of possible ways to respond to occurences and my desire is that this will be an evening for this to happen.

If you would like to attend please RSVP to:

Nutrition & Its Impact on Learning

Nutrition & Its Impact on Learning

Does your child have a well-balanced diet? Is your student eating the foods that will enable attention and focus in school? Has the dinner table become a power struggle? If you have faced some of these issues, plan to attend PCN's panel discussion on nutrition.

  • Understand how nutrition & exercise impact attention, learning, & school performance.
  • Learn how to encourage healthy eating habits along with great ideas for snacks & meals.
  • Listen to experts about how to handle picky eaters and anxiety at the table.
PCN's upcoming forum, Nutrition & Its Impact on Learning, will be held on January 13, 2014 in the Normandale Auditorium from 7-9 PM. Admission is Free!  Please see  www.edinapcn.com for more information.

Incoming Kindergarten Sibling Preference for 2014

For current Normandale families with a child who will be kindergarten age by September 2014, please remember that to receive "sibling preference" for Normandale, you must notify the district office by 4:00 PM on January 13, 2014.

You should have already received your mailing from the district. Instead of an envelope this year, it is a 5-fold cardstock brochure with the "pink" Program Preference Form as one of the panels. There are different options this year for submitting your information.

1) You can tear this "pink" page off and mail it in. You will receive an email confirmation that it has been received.

2) You can drop it off at the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Edina Community Center.

3) You can fill it out online. The web address is listed on the pink page. You will receive a message that your form has been submitted.

Information turned in after the deadline will be numbered in the order received and placed at the end of the waitlist if a lottery is necessary.

If you should have any questions about the process, please contact the Normandale office at 952-848-4100.
